Chapter 7 A birthday wish come true
The stable hands had set up a huge tend behind the barn for all the food tables not to far from the stage that they had been putting together all day. It was really all the hammering that had woke me up only after 5 hours of sleep. We had gotten back from the Upton farm that morning around 8ish. Mom made sure I got right into bed. I had thought that I would have had a hard time getting to sleep but 16 hours on your feet kind of does something to a person.
I had the most amazing dreams, how could I not with the thrill of a horseback ride in the early morning and then top it all Meeting Tom Hiddleston. Okay so I admit it. If I died in my sleep I'd still be the happiest girl in the world. I doubt many people would like it but heck. What more can a girl ask for.
Well woke up to the smell of all things Pancakes and bacon. Hey, I'm a farm girl I'm used to raising the pig that bacon came from and the Sunday picnic ham. LOL.. I don't think many people can appreciate my little job.
Oh and just so you know. I really did raise a pig that ended on our table. His name was Arnold and boy was that some dang good bacon. Of course when I found that out I didn't eat bacon for a long, long time. I'm just thankful that mom and dad hadn't been into lambs or my little Snoopy might have been on the menu too. I raised him from a bottle; my cute little buddy followed me everywhere.
After a nice breakfast, well lunch as it was nearly 1 pm, I showered and changed into my blue jeans and a cute little white tank top. No time like the present to get some sun on these pale shoulders. Of course it was still light out at least for a bit. I went out and helped dad and the farm hands start setting up the stage, tables and chairs. It wasn't long before little old ladies pulled up out front and started bringing food to all the tables we had set up. Mom was watching over things like a hawk arranging things here and there. You know how some folks can be, always fussing over things.
We had just finished setting up the stage when the band pulled up and started setting up their instruments. I said hello to a good friend of mine my old guitar teacher. I took lessons from him for 4 years before college. I learned how to play the guitar and sing pretty well. I never did anything with it except play a bit for friends. He asked me if i had any plans to play tonight.
I gave my old friend (guitar teacher) a look that would make my mother proud. It meant, Not in this life time. I made a mental note to go practice for an hour or so just in case she got talked into it. It had been a long time since she had played. I remembered that Dad had given me an old guitar that I kept in my closet. I left to allow the others to finish up.
I went into the house through the back door so I didn't see that mom had a guest on the front porch. It was my intention to practice a little guitar before the nights festivities began.
I had a feeling mom and dad would pull me up on that stage to play a few songs. I just hoped that they didn't expect me to sing. As much as I loved singing it had been several years since I had sang in front of more than must my tank of fish at home and the teddy bear I sometimes cuddled with on the couch during a scary movie.
I went to my room and pulled out my guitar in the case from the closet. I laid the case on my bed and undid the hinges to take the guitar out. I tested the strings to make sure they didn't need replacing. I believe I had it out last year for my short 3 day weekend visit. I had replaced them then but you never know what can happen in a year of non-use.
The strings seemed fine so I slung the strap over my shoulders and found a pick still in the strings and began to tune the guitar. Not that badly out of tune but only just a little. Before I knew it I was playing the first song I had ever played on it. Independence day by Martina McBride, I was amazed to know that I nearly knew all the notes by heart. I knew the words it was after all on my play list in my car and on my phone.
