Awakening

Darkness hung heavily in the air, making it difficult to see. These spaces of time where he was left alone often turned out to be both a blessing and a curse. He'd slowly begun to work out three simple rules. One was, he couldn't rest within this zone, not fully at least. He could try and sleep, could try and let his mind wonder a little but no type of feeling of rest came to him. Secondly, time was hard to keep track of. Sometimes, he'd see flashes of images, as if his curse was actively seeking out events taking place outside to keep him up to track with important world events. He was aware of these type of situations but holding onto the information was somewhat difficult as the third rule seemed to be the longer he remained within this dark void, without being summoned, without having a master, the more the darkness ate away at his spirit and his memories.

Not the bad ones though. No, those were the ones to remain. This darkness sucked away the ones he tried to hold onto, those precious memories he'd reclaimed during his last summoning just to lose them again during his time of rest. This was all part of his punishment though so what right did he have to sit and feel pity for himself? He'd wished all this upon himself, placed himself with this fate. He had no one to blame but himself. Still, he couldn't help but long for a new master. Even if it was someone selfish, someone who'd only allow him outside for a few hours, it was better than remaining within this ever present darkness. How much time had passed he was unsure of but it must have long judging by the pressure and power of the darkness, coldness seeping into his bones as he laid staring up into nothing, just allowing his mind to wonder through the images he'd recently been shown.

Humans with magic had seemed to went into hiding. Every image he seen seemed to suggest that they worked in the shadows, they kept their gifts hidden and if any was discovered they soon went missing. Perhaps that was the reason as to why he had yet to be summoned. If the magical realms were closing down then perhaps no one was even looking for his ring. He blinked and sat up, suddenly feeling a building pressure from deep within his chest. Was this fear? Was he actually afraid? Him? He glanced around at the never changing world he was in and dragged himself back up to his feet, one hand pressed against his chest which still felt rather painful. Even if he was afraid what was the point in getting this worked up? Maybe, maybe the darkness would finally just kill him then he'd at least be free. If the curse even worked that way. Perhaps he'd just be absorbed instead, made to relive his darker memories over and over and...

He screamed in frustration at himself, shaking his head before taking off in a random direction. There was no escape, he knew that. The only small light he had was whenever a master found his ring and summoned him. He got out of the darkness for a short time, sometimes as long as a few years if really lucky, then was forced back into the coldness. Time between the light and dark was always in favor of the latter but never for as long as this. Had the world simply forgotten about him? There was a time where wars were fought over who got to control his powers, a fact he used to find somewhat amusing but now he was feeling tired, cold and somewhat alone. If he could only sleep then perhaps he wouldn't feel so bad but the world just wouldn't allow for it. So, he did the only thing he could, he walked on and on, holding onto his few good memories and silently weeping for them whenever he could feel the edges being torn away. He wondered if the curse was finally going to break him. If a new master didn't appear before he'd lost all hope, if he was summoned as a shell of his former self, would that mean that she'd finally won over him? He laughed a little, sighing as it echoed around him. She'd won long ago when she'd done this to him.

How long he walked for was impossible to know. A time came when he finally just sat down, a chair appearing behind him as he fell backwards. He needed out. He needed to be found. It was harder and harder to breath and yet with all certainty he knew he wouldn't die. Death would be a sweet gift compared to this. Yet, this was what he deserved. For all those souls he'd destroyed, lives he'd ended, families torn apart and countries burnt to ashes, this was the punishment that he deserved. Once again, as always though, he was selfish and longed to be given a few moments of peace, a few moments away from his own company.

"But it looks weird"

He froze, sitting up straighter and glancing up, the purple clouds seeming to swirl with energy he'd feared had vanished from the world. Someone was very close to his ring, was touching it actually it seemed. His heart felt as though it was about to rip it's way from his chest.

"This was a precious gift from your grandma. She told us to pass it down to you whenever she passed and that is what we intend to do"

"I get that but" a pause, "Fine but do I have to wear it?"

"You don't like it?"

"It looks weird" another pause, "But I do like it. Just scared I may lose it"

"You won't, just put it on and lets go. This house gives me the worst of feelings"

He gasped a little as he felt the first rays of warmth flow through him, the darkness beginning to slowly edge away to the sides of his vision. Someone was wearing his ring! They hadn't summoned him yet but it seemed that them wearing his prison was enough to chase off the darkness at least enough to allow him to breath a little easier. He smiled weakly and allowed himself to relax a little more, waiting for when he'd be summoned. It was weird, for someone to the ring and not call on him right away. Perhaps they were not in a safe place? That worried him somewhat. Here he was getting all excited at the prospect of getting out of his personal hell for a few hours but that'd never happen if something bad was to happen to his master. His ring was being worn. Even if the jewel hadn't been kissed yet that still would make the owner of the ring his master right? The curse would allow for that comparison, right?

He tried on that thought but found his way out barred, which wasn't too surprising if he had paused to think. Only his master could grant him permission to leave the ring. Some of his previous masters had locked him inside on purpose as a method of punishment even. Oh well, at least he was warmer for now.

"Mum...I'll do it okay?"

That voice again. He could only guess it was of his new masters, a young female it sounded like.

"Yes. Sorry I'm still a little dazed"

"That's okay. Go inside with dad" the voice sounded tired yet concerned, "It won't take me too long to get the rest of the boxes inside"

"If you need help ask your brother"

"Will do"

Boxes? Where these people moving? He wondered where he'd last been when summoned but no memories came to light. It'd been a long time ago and as no memories seemed present he could only guess that his last master had at least been a kind one. He smiled a little sad at the thought then paused as he felt sudden sorrow, shaking his head clear. Those where his new master's emotions. Tears where falling ontop of his vessel.

"We'll miss you" the soft voice chocked, "Please watch over mother"

A death in the family perhaps? He was beginning to grow more agitated of feeling trapped, the curse pushing at him to make his master happy again though right now he was powerless to do so. He had to wait to get summoned and that was seeming less likely by the second. Whoever this girl was, she wasn't aware of the power contained in the 'weird' ring that she now wore and what was so weird about it? His vessel was of a silver ring, the band engraved with small symbols that actually spelled his True Name. In the center of the band sat a blue sapphire with silver and gold petals sprouting out from the center. His first master, the one who'd given him the curse was female so it made sense for his vessel to be rather feminine in nature.

"I love you"

He was pulled from his thoughts as he finally felt the tug of being summoned, light surrounding his form as ancient power quickly rushed through him. Oh the warmth was welcoming after so long. She must have kissed the sapphire then. His short moment of glee though was cut short as he was greeted to his new master with a long scream and a punch to the face, catching him by surprise and knocking him back to the ground where he knelt glaring up at the strange girl who was now pointing at him.

"Where...where the hell did you come from!"

"...oh this is going to be a long story...Master"
