As you have met Belle, I think it is time to introduce you to the Beast.
The Beast didn't have a successful past like you and I may have had. His father, Malcolm, took him on a journey as a boy to Neverland, a place where can do as you please. Malcolm showed the boy a magnificent tree and climbed it while the child lingered at the bottom. Unfortunately, Malcolm never made the journey back down. His mother was never mentioned.
As the years went on, the child travelled back to the Enchanted Forest. As the child turned to an adult and the adult turned into a coward, he found his first love, Milah. But Milah did not care for the coward as the coward did for Milah. Milah left the coward and her only child, Baelfire, for a rather handsome pirate. The pessimist then grew up again and raised his son. He then decided that he had had enough of being called a wimp, chicken, a coward. Travelling to a distant castle, he burnt down the walls and stables and stole the Dark One's dagger.
Trekking back home, he met the Dark One himself. With one jab of the dagger into the Dark One, he was killed. The coward was now the Dark One... From then on, he lived in a castle all alone.
