{{CHAPTER ONE}}

Scarlett's * POV
I buried my face in my pillow as I willed them to stop. Like always, they didn't listen.
"Daddy, what are you doing?...stop!" ten year old Annie screamed as her dad slowly brought his hands to the zipper of her jeans. She pressed herself further against the bed and tried to get further from her father's prying hands. Her father just kept on coming, like a tiger stalking his prey.
"Daddy, please stop, your scaring me!" she cried as she desperately pushed her dad's hands away. She was so scared that she didn't even notice her dad's hand coming up to strike her face until fiery pain ran from the corner of her right eye all the way down to her mouth. She let out a pained sob, she's never been hit before.
"Just shut the fuck up you little piece of shit." her dad snarled as she held her cheek and cried for him to stop but he wouldn't listen. Her dad lowered her jeans and smacked her again, harder than before.
"You deserve this, just like your mother!" he roared as he pushed her down to the floor. She quickly sat up and tried to scoot further away, but her dad just grabbed her by the ankles and dragged her under him. His heavy wait slightly cutting off her respiration.
"d-daddy, please...no!" she gasped. He raised his hand to strike her again when the door flew open and her mother rushed in and pushed her dad off her.
"Get the hell away from her." her mother slapped her father across the face, the sound echoing throughout the small bedroom "She's your daughter! how dare you try to do this to her!?" her mother screamed as she bent down, quickly picked her up and began to carry her out the room, away from her dad.
"Where the hell do you think your going!?" bellowed her father who was standing in the middle of the room with his fist clenched and a blue vein bulging from his sweaty forehead as he breathed through his nose.
"I've had enough! mate or not, I will not stay another minute by your pathetic side!" her mother yelled with tears streaming down her face. Her eyes flashing with betrayal, horror, and disbelief.
Then it happened.
Her father brought out a small silver gun from the waistband of his jeans and pointed it at her mother's face as he gave an amused laugh. "it's funny how you think you can just leave without my permission, but I have bad news," her fathers face hardened. "you aren't going anywhere." and before her mother had a chance to escape, a shot fired and a hole formed through her mother's forehead.
Her mother's face became blank as blood dropped from the hole onto Annie's face. She cried as her mother dropped to her knees before completely falling forward, still carrying Annie. She struggled from underneath her mother until she could balance herself on her knees and clutch her mother's hand. "Mommy?" she whispered as she reached to touch her mothers own bruised cheek.
She continued to call for her mother to wake up, but as she received no response nor movement, she became more frantic. "Mommy! Wake up!" she screamed as she shook her mothers shoulders, begging her to not go away.
"She's dead! And it's your goddamn fault!" Her father screamed from behind her. She could hear the loud footsteps of her father but made no attempt to flea as she continued to scream for her mother to wake up.
She couldn't be gone, she still needed to show her how to ride a bike and how to make her very own quilt, like the ones that her mother made at Christmas. Her mother couldn't be gone because she still needed her. Her mother was the only one who loved her.
