AN: I got a little emotional writing this chapter... hope you enjoy it though.
As it turned out, if Katherine was right about anything, it was that the week went by in a blur. Jack tried to spend as much time with Katherine and the rest of the newsies as possible, but it still seemed like it wasn't enough, because the day that everyone had been dreading came sooner than anyone wanted it to. The boys had told Jack that since the headlines had been pretty bad, they couldn't go to the train station to see him off, but Jack suspected that they didn't want to have to say their goodbyes. So, Katherine was the only one with Jack. She definitely didn't want to see him go either, but she had to spend as much time with him as she could before they ran out of time together. They were sitting on a bench, waiting for the conductor to call for boarding. Katherine seemed surprisingly calm.
"You promise you'll write as much as you can?" Katherine asked. Jack smiled slightly, but quickly became serious again.
"Yeah, Ace, I promise. I'm gonna miss you and the boys too."
"I know, I just don't want you to leave. You will write?"
"Yes, I swear. Katherine you know that's the the fourth time you've asked me that?" Katherine sighed.
"Yes, I know. I just want to make sure."
"I get it Kath, if it was you leaving I'd wanna make sure too." She scoffed at that.
"Thank God I can't go, I probably wouldn't last a day..."
"I don't-" Jack was cut off as worry flashed in Katherine's eyes once again and she spoke.
"You will be careful, won't you?!"
"Ace, I can't promise that I ain't gonna get hurt."
"I know I just want, no..." Katherine grabbed his hands in hers, practically holding him in a death grip. "I need you to promise me that you will be as careful as you can. You have to come back to me." Jack pulled her into an embrace. He could tell by her strained voice that she was desperate for him to answer her question. She just wouldn't dare reveal her emotions.
"I promise that I will do everything in my power to come back to you safely. That's the best I can do." Katherine pulled away from him reluctantly.
"The best you can do is always perfect for me." They shared a gentle kiss. Jack was about to begin making it more passionate when they were interrupted by the conductor of the train.
"Passengers may now begin boarding!" Katherine broke away and glanced at the train.
"That's your ride..."
"Guess that means I hafta go now... I'll miss you Ace." He pulled her in for one last hug, brief but tight.
"Write to me?"
"As much as I can, I swear. I love you."
"Love you too." And just like that, he was gone. Katherine gazed at him until he stepped onto the train, and watched as it pulled out of the station. He was gone, and she might never see him again... No, she couldn't think like that. So instead, she just put her head in her hands and began to cry softly on the bench.
