TORI's POV~"Of course, he's fucking crazy," I laughed.
"And you have feelings for him?"
Nodding, I reached my hand into the large glass bowl of buttered popcorn, and popped a piece into my mouth. Sitting opposite of me on the couch was Ray. He had changed into black gym shorts and a gray shirt, and his straight blonde hair was combed slightly. I was laying long ways on the couch, my feet in his lap, and he was at the other end with his feet in my lap.
The room was dark, because we had turned the lights off to watch the original The Wizard of Oz- my favorite movie at the time. Ray had insisted it had "horrible acting" and an "awful plot line". We ended up talking about Harry, though. We talked about him often.
"Harry doesn't care about me, so it doesn't matter if I have feelings for him or not," I said, shrugging.
Ray smiled. "He's a real dick if he didn't give you a chance."
I laughed quietly, feeling the blood rush to my cheeks.
"You know everything about me, tell me about you," I said, changing the mood.
Ray shrugged. "Do you want to know a secret?"
I nodded, my eyes widening.
"My real name is Grayson, but my nickname is Ray," he whispered.
I laughed, hitting him with a pillow.
"Grayson. That sounds professional," I said, smiling.
He chuckled lightly. "You know, that name makes me sound like a dick on anyone else's lips but yours."
"Why can't Harry tell me things like you do?" I asked, to no one in particular. I think I was asking myself more than Ray.
"He's a screwed up man, and deep down in his cold and black heart, he has a soft spot for you. Has he told me that? No. But that's all I can see," he replied.
Glancing back up at him as his words began to sink in, our eyes met once again.
"I've been in your situation before," Ray said.
I tilted my head quizzically. "What do you mean?"
"I loved a girl once."
Tilting my head in curiosity, I nodded for him to go on. He sighed, playing with his fingers as he continued.
"It's very much like you and Harry. We were juniors in high school, both sixteen years old. Isabella was very wild, though. She was on drugs all the time and she would drag me to parties I didn't want to go to. Eventually, I fit in at the parties. She was worth the hell and torment and headaches. One night, she got drunk. I begged her not to drive home over the phone. Of course she didn't listen. She swerved off the road and hit a tree. The car went down into a ditch. It was hours before the cops found her ," Ray said, his clear green eyes beginning to water.
I shivered. "And she died?"
He shook his head. "No. Worse. She had two eye surgeries and still ended up blind. Her brain was damaged, and part of her leg was amputated due to infection in a cut. My best friend, Liam, was in the car with her. She was taking him to my house to spend the night. I didn't know until we got to the hospital and he...he didn't make it. After that, I had to break up with her, even if I loved her. I moved here and found a coffee shop to get a job at, and told everyone that my name was Ray. Because that was our thing. Everyone called her Bella, but I called her Isabella, and everyone called me Grayson, but she called me Ray."
I sighed, closing my eyes. I didn't know what to say or do. His girlfriend was so bad, and so reckless, it ended up ruining their relationship. Ray was right, it was much like Harry and me. I was a fool to think it would work with Harry. He's barely in my mind now, I had feelings for him, but the feeling isn't mutual even if I thought it was. So, I have to cope with that and learn from my mistakes. Oh, and I have to avoid Carolyn Styles who thinks I'm her best friend.
Oh, yeah. Ray poured his heart out to me and I'm sitting here thinking about my life problems when his ex girlfriend killed his best friend.
"I'm sorry, Ray," I whispered.
His mouth twitched into a small smile. "Don't be sorry, Tori. I wanted to tell you something because apparently you don't know anything about me."
Tori. An odd feeling came in my stomach as I remembered the voice that had said my full name. That deep and raspy voice.
I laughed quietly. "You're a good guy," I said without thinking.
His smile widened. "Wow, thanks. That makes me sound like the boring good boy. I'm sure you'd much rather have a badass roommate who throws parties every night."
I shook my head. "No, no, no. I changed my mind about the badasses. Trust me."
"Are you referring to Harry?" He asked.
I shrugged. "Am I?"
Giggling, I sat up. Ray did, too. I turned my head toward the TV, which was still playing The Wizard of Oz.
I put on my actress voice, and quoted, "A heart is not judged by how much you love; but by how much you are loved by others."
Ray laughed, shaking his head. He ran a hand through his blonde hair.
"You're something, you know that?" he said.
I raised my eyebrows. "A good something or a bad something?"
"I don't know yet," Ray replied, his smile widening.
I hit him with a pillow playfully, and rolled my eyes.
"You roll those eyes too much. You shouldn't, they might get stuck like that," he said.
"Do you even know what is happening in the movie?" I asked, gesturing to the tv screen.
He nodded. "Yes, she walked down the yellow brick road and clicked her boots five times."
I stared at him, huffing playfully. "You should be ashamed."
"How so?"
"Everyone knows that her shoes are the ruby red -"
I was cut off by the obnoxious sound of my phone ringing. Turning around, I grabbed it off of the end table by the arm rest of the couch.
Oh my fucking lord.
It's Carolyn.
"Tori, I'm so sorry I'm calling you this late, but I left my ID on the kitchen table at Ray- your- you and Ray's apartment. The cops came for Harry because of a big fight with him and Eric, can you please just come to the house with my ID?" She asked.
Carolyn was sobbing through words, and taking deep breaths. I knew that tears were pouring out of her eyes.
Clutching my hand around my phone tighter, I sighed.
"I'll be there in five."
