A year ago I wished a wish upon a star and it changed my life forever.
At least I thought it was a star.
I remember a blinding white light, brighter than anything, shooting across the darkness and falling behind the horizon. At least I thought it went behind the horizon.
My grandmother told me if I always wished upon shooting stars, I would always have good luck. I had never really believed that, but that night, as I sipped my hot cocoa, it felt like a good idea."I wish something would happen to me." I whispered to the darkness. I meant something ordinary like a raise or winning something on a scratch card, but what I got was certainly not ordinary...
I had always craved the simplicity of country life ever since I was young. I had dreamed of being able to look up at the sky and see constellations, not just the polluted smog clouds of the inner city. I guess that's why I bought a cottage in the Peak District as soon as I could afford it. I never wanted to have a big job like an actress or a singer and have everyone know my name like my classmates at school. I just wanted to live a simple life, content with who I was.
Maybe if I had wanted to be famous, I wouldn't have found myself at 23 years of age, sitting on the swinging bench in my garden looking at the stars. Maybe I wouldn't have seen that shooting star. Maybe my life would never have changed forever...
