Prologue

Tokyo. Japan

The epicentre of the supernatural.

For a recent number of years, paranormal cases have been hazardously escalating in Tokyo at an alarming rate. Tokyo, intoxicated with lingering mysteries, extraordinary powers and unexplainable hauntings that breach every crook and corner of this monolithic gate of safety for humanity. Nevertheless, even after the fluctuation of cases, the supernatural is concealed under the configuration of society; hidden and sealed away. Society is a fragile thing, an ornamental vase that has endured its centuries and has kept its beautiful calligraphy, but underneath its alluring veil of artwork, streams of cracks are visible, homing the darkness that seeps through.

One nudge and it's over.

The porcelain shatters into million pieces, small chips spraying across space, leaving only fragmented pieces to lie desolate and wrecked for eternity.

Hopeless and dead.

Even with the rise of conspiracy theories, many still deny the concept of ghastly apparitions roaming at the dead of darkness, intertwining with the very existence of our lives as they mingle within the frosty haze of the night. They deny of the super-humans that have attained the gift to interact with the spirit world. Humanity will continue to reject the presence of the dead until the end of time. For it is the fear of the unknown, those that we cannot grasp with our mere senses that will perish us. The obstruction of the truth being revealed continues the flourishment of the race, keeping the world in a false mind of haven as they carry on with their lives in the thought that the unidentified are myths.

Leaving only a small number of gifted children to protect their city from harm

Present Day

It was after school, the sun's rays already slanting down the horizon, emitting a warm orange glow. The sky is bare without its clouds and leaves rustle in harmony with the autumn wind that meanders past the school structure as it continues its journey into city. The corridors and rooms were peaceful with the lack of ruckus from this morning, only the footsteps of cleaners and teachers resonating across the building.

Me and Abbie discussing the details of some strange rumour that has been circulating the school for a while. Abbie Verity. My best friend that had recently transferred to this school from England but also a descendant of a priestess from the Edo period. She bore cheerful characteristics; bright ebony eyes that twinkle, bouncy ivory, blond hair and a smile that is always accompanied by dimple in her left cheek. It wasn't long for us to make friends on the same day she transferred and soon we were telling each other secrets. Not just childhood and high school secrets like crushes but actual secrets that shaped our lives.

One fateful day, I was embraced with the knowledge of the supernatural and how it does exist and I calmly listened as she unveiled everything, how it's been happening for years, how it has been hidden but also the fact that she has obtained the mystic ability to see the unseen and communicate to it. Yes, I was shocked, tremendously shocked but now it is part of my life that I face every day. Naturally, others may avoid people like her but circumstances like hers are too exciting for me.

Abbie and I were discussing a rumour that was spreading in our school. The rumours were circling around a park that has been claimed to be cursed with a series of unnatural events attached to it. Abbie stops the conversation midway and slowly reaches for her school bag, pulling it towards the desk, taking out pictures of recent cases. The photographs are twisted with the ghastly features of the dead, some resembling the forms of mist while others looked very real. Distorted, abnormal and electrifying.
