Chapter 5
Tobias:
I look up and see a body falling towards the net. As I walk up to the net to help the new initiate down I realize she is wearing gray. I freeze because I see that it is Tris. I shake it off and try to keep cool. I knew today was her choosing day, but I never expected to see her again. I pull her out of the net and help her stand on solid ground.
"I can't believe it. A stiff, the first to jump? Unheard of." Lauren says behind me.
"There's a reason she left them Lauren." I say keeping my eyes on Tris. "What's your name?" She doesn't answer and stares at me blankly. I can't tell if she is happy to see me or not. "Think about it, you don't get to pick again."
"Tris." She says it with such confidence, such determination."
"Tris, make the announcement Four." Lauren says. A look of confusion flashes in Tris' eyes when Lauren says my nick-name.
"First jumper- Tris! Welcome to Dauntless." I set my hand on my hand on her back and turn back to the net to help the other initiates.
Once all of the initiates have jumped, Lauren and I lead the initiates down a hallway that leads to the pit. Lauren takes the Dauntless-born initiates to their dormitory and I am left with the transfers. There are only nine transfers this year, but right now there is only one that holds my attention.
"Most of the time I work in the control room, but for the next few weeks, I am your instructor. My name is four."
"Four? Like the number?" One of the Candor transfer asks.
"Yes. Is there a problem?"
"No."
"Good. We're about to into the Pit, which you will someday learn to love. It-"
"The Pit? Clever name." The Candor whispers to Tris under her breath. I walk up to her and lean close to her. If I don't show the initiates that I am not someone to be messed with then they won't take me serious.
"What's your name?" I say quietly.
"Christina." I can hear the fear in her voice as she says it.
"Well Christina, if I wanted to put up with Candor smart mouths, I would have joined their faction. The first lesson you will learn is to keep your mouth shut. Got that?" As I back away I glance at Tris, but she looks away when our eyes meet. I lead the initiates down the hallway and open the doors to the Pit. The Pit is is where all the different stores are located and where a lot of the Dauntless like to hang out. I lead them through the center of the Pit and towards the chasm.
"If you follow me I'll show you the chasm."
When all the initiates gather around the chasm I lean against the railing and watch them for a moment. "The chasm reminds us that there is a fine line between bravery and idiocy!" I shout over the roaring water. "A daredevil jump off this ledge will end your life. It has happened before and it will happen again. You have been warned."
Before dinner I show the initiates to their dormitory. As I walk down the hallway I hear footsteps behind me. I turn around getting ready to yell at the initiate, but when I turn around Tris is standing there.
"What?" I say, but it comes out harsher than I meant.
"Is that all you have to say to me 'what'?"
"What did you expect me to say? You're the one who ended things without any explanation. I lo...." I start to say I love you, but I stop myself before the words leave my mouth. "You know what never mind." I start to walk away but she grabs my wrist.
