"Sage you should stop working at the mine" Luka said one morning "it's too dangerous"

"Where else would I work" I replied "It's not as though there is much else"

"You could work at the library like me and Marth"

"Marth and I" I correct him "And you know I can't. We need all the money we can get. All of us working here won't bring in enough. Not to mention hardly anyone comes in here these days"

"So? You'd be safer"

"Says the one going to work at the factory at night" Marth said handing me a plate

"Marth your mark is showing" I say as I grab the plate. She jumps and looks down at her hand. The bandage had slipped and a little of the red was showing. A year ago her mark showed up and though it hasn't grown we hide it. The military is looking for marked to join the war efforts and I wouldn't put it past them to make Marth join despite her only being twelve years old

"You need to hide yours too" Luka said looking at my arms. My own marks had finally stopped growing but had stopped at my wrists on both arms. Hiding them was a lot harder.

"I'll be carefully" I said standing "I've got to get to work"

"Please be safe" Luka said

"Have a good day" Marth said smiling at me

"Shall we meet up and have lunch today?" I said "I've got a long break today"

"Sounds good" Marth said. I smile and kiss her cheek

"See you later"

"Bye!" They both call as I walk out

"Morning Sage" Serin called to me as I got ready
"Morning boss" I replied looking up "Is it only us working today?"

"Yeah" She said sighing "Almost everyone is fighting or making weapons to fight with"

"Well we need to bring the coal up so we don't freeze this winter"

"Ha yeah we are the only ones thinking practically these days" We laugh and then get to work.

When we finally take a break we were both tired. It was just past noon and Serin told me to take the rest of the day off

"Might as well" She said sighing "Hey Sage do you think you could work this place alone?"

"Why?" I asked looking at my boss

"Just wondering" She muttered looking up at the clouds

"You leaving tonight?"

"Yeah, my husband left a little while ago remember?" I nod

"Well I got a letter yesterday. He fought well it said but was killed in field. He told me when he left that he promised he'd be back. Asshole making promises he can't keep" She doesn't look at me as she speaks and I can only hear her voice catch

"I'm going after him" She said after a while "Got to kick the asses of the people who took him from me. I'll kick his ass too for leaving me. I'll kill him. I swear I will" She was crying and I knew she was but I didn't say anything

"I'll take care of this place for you Serin" I said "So don't you worry just try not to die on me alright?"

"No promises" She said "I'm not like my idiot husband. I'm not going to make any promises I can't keep" She stands and stares at the sky before looking down at me

"You better stay out of this war though" She said "I don't want to have to worry about you too"

"Understood boss" I said and she smiled
