Chapter 1: 'Misconceptions of my arrival'
[My Point of View]
Early morning. I could hardly see the sun. It was just one of those days... one of those days where the world just seems to spin more slowly. No ones in a rush, and no one really cares-- no one cares what you think or where your going. But today, none of that mattered. After committing myself to school for twelve long years, I had finally done it. I had graduated 92nd out of 725 and I was more than proud of myself. I somewhat resented my parents for pushing me so hard in school, but if it meant garnering some type of recognition from them, it was more than worth it. This recognition came in the form of a vacation; if you can even call it a vacation. My satisfactory performance in school had given my parents the impression that I deserved to accept the opportunity to intern in Seoul, South Korea. I had always dreamed of working behind the scenes in the entertainment business, and this was surely a once in a lifetime opportunity. So with that, today was the day-- the day I got on a plane by myself and proceeded to travel 19 hours, to a completely taboo nation; one I knew nothing about.
[After Day One]
At first, I found the nation to be the same as any other asian nation. But I was extremely wrong. The language is so 'poetic' and most people sound like they're singing when they speak. Their pop music is so addictive and I find myself singing along when I can hardly speak the language. The food is extremely spicy for someone who is not used to the chili-spicy. My room is a small, subtle and simple room. Its a little hot here since its summer time... but I cant get a mobile fan because everyone in the building for some odd reason seems to think that im going to get "murdered in my sleep" or something. I dont bother driving around; the traffic here just seems too chaotic, and these random alley way streets terrify me; its so easy to run someone over. So I just ride the cab to and from the SBS station. And that is where the real story begins.
[Day 1 as an SBS tech intern]
It was my first time in such an extensive studio. The backdrops would just vanish and reappear with a completely different appearance. So many groups entered the building with warm welcomes. Even the more seasoned artists made it a point to greet and thank the staff for their hard work. There was a huge turn out for some group shin-ee, sin-ee, no Shinee. I'm not too sure, but apparently their VERY popular. Fans came in droves with fan signs and supportive fan chants to accompany them. When they walked on stage for their rehearsal though, I completely understood why they were so loved. The vocalist was a handsome puppy who could hit the most beautiful falsettos. The other vocalist was an adorable boy who you could see as a best friend; someone supportive and humorous. The youngest-- an amazing dancer and overall performer, had amazing stage presence. And the 'diva' of the group kept the fans involved, constantly interacting with his fans through instagram backstage. Lastly, the rapper... his charisma was intoxicating. It kept me so engaged in the performance. He--was definitely my favorite. Once they finished their first rehearsal they approached the staff to receive their recommendations for camera angles and gestures. Ironically enough, he...the rapper... approached me for my contribution.
"What'd you think?" he asked.
"I think it was very cool, you guys have a great presence!" I replied.
He seemed confused, or at least not convinced by my comment.
"Are you new here?" he asked.
As if its not obvious, im not asian--the fact that I was a foreigner was written all over my face.
"Yes, I'm here for a summer internship." I claimed.
"Oh 친짜!! (REALLY)" he exclaimed.
I was a little shocked, was internship not common. Was I special?
