"Ivan?"
The postman turned the young boy towards him. It was a bright morning, and they were both tired from the tragedy of the night before. He lowered himself to be eye level with the child, and put his hands on his small fragile shoulders.
"You must understand that you will not be alone in your new home. Your parents loved you, and so do I. I will visit you as often as I can."
The postman held the Ivan's little hand as they walked towards the orphanage. The building was grand and tall, with many windows, a large front yard and even a small playground. The postman knocked on the door. It was opened by a kind looking elderly woman and accompanied by a younger girl.
"Hello there, how may I help you?" asked the lady.
"Hi," said the postman, "I called earlier today to ask if you could take care of my little friend here, Ivan."
"Yes, I do remember. Come in and I will give you the paperwork that you have to sign."
They followed the old lady into the orphanage and was welcomed by the squealing and laughter of children. Little Ivan watched the many girls and boys no older than the age of nine run around the house, cheerfully playing games or with toys. He held tighter to the postman's trouser leg.
The postman said to Ivan, "Wait here while I go do something important, okay? I'll be right back. Maybe you could meet some new friends!"
Ivan was so frightened at first, but after a short while, he was playing with the other kids so cheerfully it was as if he arrived a month ago rather than a few minutes. The postman came out of the office room and smiled to see how Ivan had fit in already.
"Ivan!" he called. Ivan looked up from playing with some building blocks and ran over to the postman. The postman lifted him up into the air and laughed. "I'm sure you're going to love it here. The ladies will take very good care of you. I have to go now, but I will see you soon." He gave him a little kiss on the top of his head, and put him down. "Bye Ivy." He said, waving. The little boy smiled at him and ran back to his new friends. The postman thanked the elderly lady and left with a smile, with the satisfying feeling that Ivan would be safe.
