I desire to stay by the warm graceful fire. The flames dance on the logs, the moisture bubbles out the end. The ground beneath me is solid. The skies lit up with the numerous stars and slice of a moon. There is perfect silence except for the occasional crack of the fire and my stiff back. I tell myself that life is good as I stand up noticing a cool refreshing breeze. I stretch out and think of the fantastic experiences I have had. As I slowly walk away from the fire I get a feeling of freedom in the open ground. I gradually pick up my pace. With resounding peace and speed I gracefully jump off the edge. With the confidence of a seasoned skydiver I begin to fall. My head down. I have no parachute. The ground opens up in front of me. A person steps out beneath me. From where he came I don't know. Bones collide with bones.
Death wasn't supposed to be painful. I wasn't supposed to jump. That person wasn't supposed to die. I was told that person gave their life for mine.
Was it worth it? Why did they do it? Life is given a new meaning. I cannot disgrace the one who without knowing me saved me. Through the pain and recovery I press on. I learn what I can about that man. I strive to make his sacrifice worth doing. My guilt is tremendous but my thankfulness is even greater.
