The person groaned and shivered in the slight chill. "Where am I?" she demanded of the empty air.

"Hello," a civilised voice, young but mature, spoke up from nowhere. Alarmed, the person sat up, but nothing could be seen as the stranger was shrouded by shadows.

"Who are you?" The person's eyes were wider than saucers.

"You don't need to know my identity. But you will do exactly what I want."

At midnight, it happened.

At various locations around the world, be it hidden by magic or concealed by natural means or simply out there, large, strong men hauled unconscious bodies into a glowing purple vortex which served as a portal to the Place.

The Place where it would happen.

After years of inactivity, the Hunger Games were back. But they were a new breed of Hunger Games - it was an experiment, without televising but certainly with much observation.

The person in charge smiled grimly. It was going to be amusing to see what would happen next.

Strife was always so entertaining, so amusing, but there was a job needed to be done.

And that was how everything started, on the 1st of March.
