One of the most important hunter rules taught by his former master was, "Always be aware of your surroundings." Not only would it prepare you in the off-chance of a battle, but it could save your life as well.
And somehow, he had managed to forget this.
Perhaps it was the sudden increase of friends he had, or at least people he knew whom he would call friends. Perhaps it was the fact that he woke up every morning with a place to go, to people who were waiting for him. Or perhaps it was that after so many years of loneliness, he had finally dared to hope, that by some small chance, he was being accepted.
And so, while in the midst of this desperate dream, he had forgotten.
He had forgotten that the building where the Cross Academy situated extended farther than the few roads he walked down daily. He had forgotten that a handful of humans and a few vampires did not represent Cross Academy as a whole.
And he had forgotten what it meant to stay alert.
And suddenly, the event hall of the Academy seemed too big and too cold, and he wanted nothing more than to get out and find someone's help, anyone, who would eager to help him and look at him with a friendly face. Anyone who would not shot him with a look, that look, by a random stranger passing him on the hall, he could not stop the sudden hitch in his breath nor the icy coldness that gripped his heart. And, oh God, it hurt.
He could not do anything; he was stunned, shocked, and then changed onto the furious state he was in. Too many emotions running through his vein right now, he just witnessed someone back slapped his boy - his youngest child ─ before Izaya utter an apology, he fell on the floor with a bloody lip and hand print on his left cheek.
For two years of shutting his vampire side, Zero Kiryu, he could feel his vines vibrating inside his body from the madness he was witnessing.
How dare her! How dare that bloodsucker Shirabuki hurt my child?!
Even I his parent didn't have the nerves to hurt him, mine or not, like that! Not even a strand of his hair!
"Look what have you done to my dress, you worthless brat!" Using a handkerchief of some noble who offered it to her, Shirabuki wipes her dress. 'This brat! How dare this pathetic brat spill his drinks to her dress! Didn't he know how much it cost!? I guess not, since he was obviously a child of his pathetic parents!' What said through her facial expressions that Zero could tell.
"S-sowwy m-miss. Izaya tw-twipped. S-sowwy." He cried.
Everyone could tell that the child was telling the truth but, no one dared to interrupt the she-Pureblood. The child with silky silver hair, white pale skin and wine orbs was crying out loud now and seemed not stopping anytime. He will not stop from crying or from his tantrum unless one of his parents would hug him. And Zero could guess now that once they gone home his youngest son would not speak to anyone. Or playing any games to his siblings.
How long? Who knows?
The brat was stubborn, like his parents.
Zero thinks back on it and realizes that Izaya's glow, while just as bright as his other three sons, is subtler. Izaya isn't as loud as Kakeru and Takeru was as a baby. He didn't spend every day laughing in his bouncy chair nor did he spend every day waving his chubby arms around and demanding kisses like the twins did. Instead Izaya was quiet and reserved and preferred soft touches and quiet moments.
Izaya was like his parents and unlike his siblings that it brought forth a breath of fresh air in the house. With Izaya's existence Zero felt like the world had suddenly clicked into place and that he had finally found everything he ever missing.
