A few days later I woke up to sirens. I panicked for a moment before I remembered where I was. I was in my bed. Safe. But then what was I hearing the sirens for? They sounded like they were right outside. I finally found the energy to roll out of bed and look out my window. When it did I was instantly awake. The sirens sounded like they were right outside because they were right outside. There were cop cars and an ambulance right outside. I stood there shivering and watched for a moment, still trying to process what was happening. Then out of the corner of my eye I saw Chase, and my heart stopped for a moment. Everything was happening next door at Chase's house. Usually I wouldn't have cared what had happened. But after the other day when Chase called me his girlfriend outside Savannah's, and then later back at my house I could've sworn he was going to kiss me after I showed him our swans, kept making me think. Chase was always there for me, even when I didn't know he was. So, naturally the only thing going through my mind at this point was, I need to show him I'm here for him. And within moments of thinking that I found myself outside yelling his name. Chase turned around as soon as I called him. He excused himself from the cop he was talking too and came over to me. I threw my arms around him. "What happened?" I asked. Chase took a deep breath and pulled me further away from his house. "Um..well, my mom, she..she had a heart attack, and she won't wake up. I have no idea where my father is and I don't know what to do." He blurted. I gaped at him and then wrapped my arms around him again. This time it was for two reasons. I felt like he needed a hug and he was really warm. I felt Chase's arms wrap around me too. "She'll be fine. She will." I whispered into his ear. He squeezed me a little tighter and suddenly it hit me why he never wanted to be at home. Ever. Then I heard my parents calling me to come back inside. I made Chase look at me. "Right here. 3:00. Got it?" I asked. Chase nodded and turned away from me going back to his yard back to the police men. I turned and ran back inside. "Alanna Kayli, what in the world were you thinking?" My dad said ushering me back inside. He told me to sit down and my mother left the room to get a blanket. When she came back she draped it across my knees and stepped back next to my dad. "What were you thinking? It's freezing out there, and I thought you knew better than to just run outside like that! You could have run into the street and got hit by a car!" My dad yelled, immediately noticing his mistake. My mother gasped and covered her mouth with her hand, and my dad tried to apologize. But I was done. I stood up. "You know what? Who cares if I got hit by a car? I've already been hit once! And I'm not a six year old, so quit treating me like I'm a goddamn wounded animal. I'm perfectly fine in case you hadn't noticed! I can take care of myself and I don't need you to tell me what to do anymore!" I snapped. As soon as I said it, I felt terrible and also really good. I turned away from my parents before either one of them could answer me and I ran back upstairs to my room, making sure to slam the door. I crawled back into bed and stared at the ceiling. The weird thing was, I wasn't thinking about what just happened with my parents the only thing I could think about was Chase. I bent over the side of my bed and felt around until I found the shoebox. I pulled it out and leaned myself against the wall. I opened the lid and pulled out the paper swan Chase had made the other day. I let it sit on my palm and I stared at it until the door to my room opened. I still didn't look away until someone sat down on my bed I looked up and saw my mother, my dad standing by the edge of my bed. They smiled at me. "I'm sorry for the way we've been acting. Is there any way you can forgive us?" Mom asked. I nodded slowly. "Yes, but no more treating me like I'm hurt okay?" I said. Mom held up her hands."You have our word. Right, Theo?" Mom asked, Dad nodded.
"Well, we'll leave you alone. I'm gonna make some breakfast, do you want any?" Mom asked standing up, I shook my head and then my parents were gone and it was just me again. I looked back down at the swan. What was this feeling? I felt all warm and cozy whenever I thought about him. I felt even more comfortable when I was with him. I felt like I was home. I don't understand what's happening. I've known Chase my whole life why am I just now feeling this way? I must've got lost in thought about what I was feeling and fell asleep, because the next thing I knew someone was shaking me awake. "Alanna?" More shaking. "Alanna!" I groaned and opened my eyes."Ughh, What time is it?" I asked.
"3:15." the person said. Me, still being half asleep didn't know who it was. 3:15..why did I feel lik- I gasped and jumped out of bed. "I Have to meet Chase. I'm late!" I exclaimed. The person laughed. "Yeah, I know you are. That's why I'm here." He said. I turned around and saw it was in fact Chase Wilkinson sitting on my bed.
"How did you get in here? There's no way my parents would have just let you in." I said. Chase pointed behind him. "I climbed in the window. What are you doing with that?" Chase asked, now pointing to his paper swan in my hand. I looked down at it and then back up at him. "Nothing." I put the bird back in the box and put the box back in it's place. I walked over to my drawer and pulled out some clothes. I turned back to Chase. "Turn around." I said.
"Why?" He asked. I held up my clothes and he turned around without further question. "I don't see why it's such a big deal to girls to change in front of other people when they get older. I mean they did it as kids, what's different now?" He asked. I laughed and peeled off my Pajama shirt. Thank God I wear a bra to sleep. I tossed my shirt and the back of Chase's head. He started to turn around to late. I squealed and held my shirt up over myself. "CHASE!" I whispered yelled so my parents didn't hear. Chase blushed so red and he turned away as quickly as possible. "I am so sorry. I thought you were done. You threw clothes at me." He said. I could hear him still blushing as I pulled on my shirt, and changed my pants. I laughed. "Okay, you can turn around now." I said. Chase shook his head. I laughed again and over behind him. "Well, now you know why girls don't like to change in front of others." I whispered in his ear, running my cold fingers down his neck. Chase shivered and turned to look at me. I got that strange fluttery feeling I only got around him. His forehead touched mine, and his hand tangled itself in my hair. Was he actually going to do it? God, I really wanted him too. I closed my eyes breathing softly and just when I thought he was going to do it he whispered, "Get your coat." And then he untangled his hand and pulled away from me. I felt betrayed. How dare he lead me on like that. Then I realized that was exactly what I did to him, he was just returning the favor. I sighed and pulled on my boots and grabbed my coat. "Meet me outside." I said. Chase nodded and climbed back out the window. I grabbed my purse and buttoned up my coat, ran my brush through my hair and then opened my door. I went downstairs. "Mom, Dad! I'm going for a walk. I'll see you later!" I called.
"Be back before 11!!" My father called.
"Okay!" I called rushing out the door and running right smack into Chase, causing both of us to slip and fall to the ground.
