When I woke up, Danny was gone and Adam was asleep, curled up next to me on the couch. I got up and walked into the kitchen, where I saw a new pack of cigarettes sitting on the counter. Underneath the pack, there was a receipt with some words written on it.
I saw you were out of smokes, so here you go. I left after the movie, you two were already asleep. I put my number in your phone, love. Give me a call sometime. ~Dsnop.
I smiled, grabbing the pack and my lighter, stepping out on the front steps. I lit up a cigarette and shivered in the cold. It was almost November, and the weather was getting pretty cold. The sun was just rising, and everything was quiet. I smiled, thinking of when Owen and I used to sit on the steps at our old house all night, just talking and laughing.
When I went back inside, I woke up Adam with the door. He sat up and rubbed his eyes. "Morning, buddy," I smiled, looking at the clock. It was almost seven.
He said nothing, laying back down and turning the TV back on. I smiled and shook my head, heading off to the bathroom. Knowing I didn't have to work, I put on a pair of skinny jeans and a black hoodie. When I went back into the living room, Adam was on my phone. He smiled, "Oh wait, here she is."
He handed me my phone and I answered, "Hello?"
"Good morning," A familiar voice said cheerfully. "I know I said you should call me but I was wondering if you and Adam would like to join me for breakfast."
"I can't really afford to go out and--"
"I'm buying."
I rolled my eyes, "You already spent 6,000 dollars and a pack of cigarettes on me."
"And another 20 won't hurt," He replied.
"Where?" I laughed, not arguing with his logic. "I'll call a cab."
"No need, I'll pick you up in a half hour."
"I'll see you then," I laughed.
Adam was looking at me with a wide smile when I hung up. "Danny likes you, he told me."
"Did he?" I laughed, giving him a pat on the back and pushing him off to the direction of his room, "Go get dressed, mister."
Adam answered the door while I was buckling up my boots. Danny crouched down and gave him a high-five. "Good morning, kiddo."
He came in and gave me a hug. "You know," I laughed as we walked out to his car. "I think there's a time limit you're supposed to wait to call so that you don't look desperate."
Adam buckled himself in the backseat, and I sat up front. Danny put on his seat belt, to set an example for Adam, I assumed. He smile and pulled out of the driveway. "I don't care if I look desperate."
"See, mommy. I told you he liked you," Adam gleamed in the backseat.
I said nothing, just smiled to myself.
When we got to the IHOP, I looked over the menu, trying to find the cheapest thing. Danny noticed. "I don't mind if you want something that cost more than five dollars," He laughed, sipping his coffee.
"You may not," I told him, wiping Adam's milk mustache. "But I do."
"Okay, but don't complain to me if you go home unsatisfied."
I rolled my eyes and went back to the menu.
Adam got a stack of chocalate chip pancakes, and I ordered a plate of eggs, toast, and home fries. Danny got a big steak omelet, and wouldn't quit trying to share it with me.
"So I have to ask," I said, forking a piece of egg into my mouth. "What kind of rockstar just wakes up at seven in the morning to go to IHOP with a girl and her five year old son?"
Adam gave Danny a funny look.
Danny shrugged, "The kind of rockstar who is passed the 'sex & drugs' part of Rock & Roll."
"The what?" Adam asked.
"Nothing, honey." I said quickly. Then I shot a look at Danny. He mouthed an apology and I asked, "Oh, you're over that phase?"
"Yeah," He nodded, patting his belly. "And I've got the beer gut and hospital records to prove it."
I shook my head and laughed, "Good to know."
On the drive home, we passed a box of puppies. "Mom, can we get one?" Adam said, clinging to the window.
"Sorry, sweetie, not today." I said, telling Danny to drive on.
When we got home, Adam asked Danny to play monopoly with him again. "Sorry, little man. I gotta head out. Thank you for a fucking awesome morning," He said, high-fiving him.
"Watch the languauge," I laugghed. "You're talking to a five year old."
"Oops," Danny shrugged, giving me a hug. "I'll talk to you later?"
"Alright," I smiled, waving him off.
Adam plopped down on the couch and turned on the TV. "I like Danny."
"Me, too, kiddo."
