"Don't leave me," I whisper softly in his ear. "I can't live without you." Ryder chuckles beside me.
"How come?" He asks as he wraps an arm around me. I lean back against the wall. Ryder and I are sitting on a couch in my apartment. He is wearing a Republic soldier outfit, white gloves, white vest with the rank of agent sown into the sleeves and golden epaulettes. My outfit doesn't look as delicate or snazzy as his. Just a black pants with a black tee and a light leather jacket over it. I'm a Republic Agent. (Synthetic leather, meaning fake leather. Imported from Colorado. Real leather barely exists anymore.)
"How come?" Ryder repeats quietly. I rest my head on his shoulder, and he looks down at me with his bright sea blue eyes. His gaze sends a shiver down my spine. Why can I not live without this boy? He owns my heart.
"Why?" I grin and meet his gaze. "The reason why I can't live without you is because you absolutely own my heart, little boy." I trace a finger along his jawline and hold his gaze. "Gotta tell you something, Ryder." A look of puzzlement crosses his face.
"What is it?" he asks. I lean in closer to him so that our noses touch. My dark brown eyes gaze into his bright blue eyes.
"I love you, Ryder." He breaks eye contact and looks away, taking my right hand with his two hands. Ryder takes a deep breath. Then meets my gaze again, a small smile on his face.
"I..." He takes another deep breath. "We can't be together. What happened in the past cannot be forgotten. I'm sorry, Sky, but you know as well as I do that we can't be together." He gets off the couch and stands up. A lump starts forming in my throat. What? I can't let him leave like this. I pop to my feet.
"Ryder, I'm sure we can work this out somehow. I can get free time from being an agent. I could just work part time for the Republic so we can spend more time together. Please... Ryder... I mean--" He stops me short by holding up a gloved hand.
"Goodbye, Sky," he says. I watch as he turns around and heads back to the front door. He's leaving. I practically let out a scream.
"Wait, Ryder," I yell while running towards him. He turns around and catches me in his arms. "Don't go..." I look at him with pleading eyes and our lips meet. A last farewell kiss. He places his forehead against mine and gazes into my eyes.
"Farewell," he whispers softly, then he turns around and disappears into the light. I feel like I'm falling to the ground, falling to my death. Then arms catch me. My eyes open and look into his eyes. Bright sea blue eyes. Ryder. He gives me a small smile and helps me back to my feet. "Sky..." he whispers. "I'm dying. I have a brain tumor and I'm dying. I only have one month left to live. I don't want to break your heart, so I want us to be over before I die. I love you, Skylar, but I do not want to break your heart. You will always be in my heart. I love you, Sky." He retreats back into the light, leaving me alone.
