Grey.

For a moment, the colour encased my vision. His pleading eyes almost made me reconsider. Almost.

"You have to leave," I said firmly, but Hunter stayed put. I squeezed my eyes firmly shut. I didn't want to cry. I couldn't cry. This was only my second day.

"You can't possibly love him" Hunter mouth twisted in disgust, his pleading grey eyes now turned harsh.

"Hunter. I love him and besides, If I remember correctly it was you who broke things of-"

"I know! But I'm apologizing. I was-"

"No. None of that, please leave." I begged, and with him showing no signs of budging I began to get impatient. "NOW!"

It seemed like it took every ounce of control he had to move his body toward the office doors and just as he could open it, it was pulled open by Trent, one of six members of the royal council.

"Murders, rapes, kidnappings...just to name a few!" Trent stormed through unaware of Hunter's presence, "If I was in your place, Marcus would be-" His voice had grown louder with each word.

"I will see later this afternoon Mr. Archibald" I raised my voice to draw Trents attention to Hunter. His head then snapped to the door where Hunter's eyebrows where raised in suspicion.

"Out!" Trent barked, causing Hunter to bow his head and shuffle out the door. As the door slammed shut Trent turned to face me. He was a tall, broad shoulder man with a sprinkle of grey in his black hair. His dark brown eyes stared intensely at me. "We need to talk"

I nodded in response, and pushed out a transparent shield out from my mind. As soon as the bubble encased us both I looked at Trent which encouraged him to speak.

"The vampires, they're up to no good and Marcus...Marcus needs to dealt with," He said with such anger that his chest moved up and down rapidly while his nostrils flared.

"I understand Trent. He is currently under investigation, we can't just evict him without cause", I tried to reason

"He has no control over them Nina! That is cause enough!!"

"His methods are not in our best interests...animal sources are scarce. If he were allowing them to attack unsuspecting humans that would give me reason to banish him. But we don't have any evidence, Trent, hence this investigation." Just as he began to open his mouth to spit out a retort a knock sounded through the large oak doors and echoed through the office. David, our butler poked his head in, "He is here, your Majesty". I'd never been so grateful for a disruption during a meeting with a fellow council member, I nodded in response before he shut the door.

"I invited Marcus to court", I informed Trent and before he could complain I added, "So that you and the rest of the council members can question him. If we find nothing, he resumes his position as chancellor and if we do we either banish him or keep investigating." Trents eyebrows shot up in approval and then he turned around to follow David.

I sneaked a yawn before I followed him down the lengthy hall to palaces greeting room. When Marcus and his advisors came into sight I began to walk quicker to get to him before Trent did.

"Nina, my my aren't you just as beautiful as that last time we met?" Marcus cooed as walked closer to him. It was clear that his flattery came as an attempt to get on my good side, however I could see right through it. He resented the tight reign I had upon the chancellors of the realm and he compared my leadership to that of my father who, in my opinion, was a bit too lenient towards Marcus over the years and he did everything he could to disobey my orders.

As the second eldest of the vampires, Marcus had been the longest and only chancellor of Krūv, the city that was home to all the vampires within the realm. Vampires were usually hard to control due to the differences in rules between clans and because of this there were very little laws that governed them. Not only were the vampires hard to control, but so was Marcus. He was powerful due to his age, and yet most defiant to the laws the council had imposed upon him. My father believed that he knew what he was doing but I wasn't so sure, no one really knew what they where up to down there at Krūv until our quarterly summits and even then no one really knew except for the vampires themselves.

"Your presence is always a pleasure, Marcus" I smiled through my lies, we both knew the extent to which we hated each other but had been forced to cooperate as business partners. I could feel Trents gaze upon my back, why don't you see what he's been up to?

Us council members could communicate with each other within our minds. I didn't nod at Trents suggestion because I didn't want Marcus to know we were conversing.

"Would you mind if I take a look at your progress Marcus?" I reached out my hand with my palm up awaiting him to take it. As queen I possessed a vast array of abilities, one of them being the ability to push into ones mind to read their thoughts, intentions and experiences even control them if I wanted but since Marcus was a chancellor his mind was closed to mine unless he allowed me to enter it. It was preventive measure to hinder the ruling sovereigns ability to psychologically control a chancellor and possess ultimate power. Marcus seemed to be reluctant at first causing Trent stiffen behind me, that isn't a good sign, he seemed to be happy at the possibility that Marcus was hiding something. Marcus then grabbed my hand firmly as if to hide his prior hesitation.

A burst of images erupted in my mind, most consisted of Marcus enjoying his privileges within his chambers, massages, alcohol, parties. His annoyance at the ongoing investigation was also revealed; he didn't know why his authority was in question and wanted more than anything to know. Usually crime within the realm is dealt with council members, and if the issue is just a small one jurisdiction is granted to the chancellor of the city, it allowed for us to be involved in happenings in the world of the vampires, werewolves, witches and other creatures. Earlier this month, it was brought to our attention that a group of drunken humans had been attacked and had their blood drained. No matter was creature you were in the realm; the most important law to abide by was not to kill carelessly. It wasn't the only time Marcus' rule was questioned there were many over the centuries, disappearances, uprising against the council and so on. As I digged in deeper within his mind nothing rung alarm bells, but there was an odd sensation that I'd never felt before. I felt as though a part of his memories were blocked, it was unusual and I didn't like the likelihood of Marcus having the capacity to pick and choose what I could see. I held my suspicious expression being careful not to falter after figuring out that he in fact is most certainly was hiding something and that I couldn't see it.

"We have much to talk about, come along now" I told him sternly while raising an eyebrow. This caused Marcus' expression to change to an almost frightened one but it had gone away as quickly as it came. Something was definitely up. I turned around to face Trent and gave him a glare that told that Marcus could not be trusted.

Guess I was right then, Trent stated smugly in my head while holding an emotionless expression. I continued to walk past him while sending him my thoughts about what I had sensed.

As we all made our way to the courtroom I fell back behind them and told Trent that I'd meet them there soon. I stopped walking as the others carried, I watched them get smaller and smaller and then turn off into the waiting hall that led into the courtroom. I needed a minute to breathe; I wondered what Marcus was up to. Did he ask a witch to cast a spell that could hide thoughts? Why would he do that? What was he hiding?
