The door clicked softly behind me as I entered the house. Well, house is what Sherlock and I call it, others call it a mansion.
I could hear the fight from outside, that's why I made sure I was quiet. They were always fighting nowadays, it never seemed to stop.
I went upstairs to avoid them, silently hoping my brother would too. He would be home in about an hour but they would probably still be going strong when he got home.
At the top of the stairs I turned left and then right, stepping into my room. I set down my bag and began on algebra. It was easy so I finished it in a couple minutes.
I glanced around my room, it was painted a deep red and had gold finishing around the edges. People were often astounded when they came in here, no one expects a 12 year old to have such a tasteful room. Sherlock's is similar but instead of red his walls are painted blue.
I picked up my violin and began to practice, drowning out the noise of their yelling. I was so wrapped up in the song that I didn't notice when Sherlock wandered in. When I finished the piece I heard clapping from behind me and spun to see Sherlock sitting on my bed smiling.
"How was school?" I asked as I flopped down next to him on the red comforter.
"Mmm... Good..." he mumbled as he curled up next to me and fell asleep.
Sherlock was so cute when he slept, him being five and all. I ran my fingers through his dark curly hair as he slept, thinking...
My thoughts were interrupted by a crash from downstairs. Sherlock was woken from his sleep and instantly grabbed hold of e while burying his face into my shirt.
"Shhh, Sherly... it's okay." I whispered as another crash echoed up the stairs. Sherlock whimpered into my shirt and pulled the covers over his head. I stuck my head into the covers and looked at him.
"Do you want to play pirates?" I asked, hoping that would take his mind off our parents.
He opened his eyes and smiled.
"Really Myc?!" he asked hopefully.
"Of course, I'll get the swords you get the treasure!" I said flinging the covers off our heads and leaping off the bed. There was a chest at the end which held what few toys I had. Taking out 2 wooden swords and an eye patch i made my way over to my window.
Sherlock toddled in holding a mini treasure chest that we filled with chocolate. I opened the window and threw the swords and eye patch down. Then I swung one leg out and climbed down the trellis like I had so many times before.
When I reached the ground Sherlock stuck his head out the window and I nodded. He held out the "treasure" and dropped it, like always I caught it just before it hit the ground. Then I turned my attention back to Sherlock.
"Jump." I said as I reached my arms forward to catch him.
He did as he was told and pushed off backwards from the trellis and into my arms. I stumbled backwards a bit but steadied myself and set him down.
I pick up my sword and stick it through my belt loop while Sherly holds the eye patch up and waits for me to tie it. When I'd finished he picked up his sword and the treasure chest and ran over to the swing set. I made my way to the big oak tree and we began!
"Arg!" Shouted Sherlock as he ran towards me at full speed with his sword in front of him. I dodged him by side stepping and then circled around to face him.
"I'll steal yer treasure Captain Sherly!" I shouted as I turned away from him and made my way to the treasure chest.
"Not so fast ye scurvy dog!" Sherly said from behind me. I picked up the box and ran (slowly) back to the tree, but Sherlock was behind me and threw his sword at me.
I tripped and fell, the box landing a few feet away. I reached out to grab it but Sherlock was in my way.
"Ha ha, Captain Sherlock wins!" he said happily.
"Not today!" I shouted as I shot my hand out and grabbed his ankle. I pulled him to the ground, stood up and held my sword to him.
He had the treasure in his hand so I bent to take it out but he kicked me behind the knee and I fell on top of him. He took my sword and ran, with the treasure to the middle of the yard where there was an ugly bent tree that if he stood on his tiptoes he could reach the first branch.
I got up and walked, with Sherlock's sword (which had been discarded) to the tree where he sat on a horizontal branch. He opened up the box and took out a piece of chocolate.
"Truce?" he asked as he held the chocolate out for me.
"Truce." I confirmed taking it and climbing up next to him.
I laid my head against the trunk of the tree and extended my legs down the branch so I was lying down. Sherlock then snuggled up into my lap and we sat there happily eating chocolate until they were gone.
"Hungry?" I asked Sherlock, whose head was lying on my chest with his eyes closed.
"Mmm..." he mumbled as he snuggled up to me.
"Dinner?" I asked again, hoping to rouse him enough to get down.
"Sure Myc." he said quietly as I picked him up and laid him down in the grass, didn't want him falling off the tree!
I went inside and emerged several minutes later with food, tea and several blankets. It was getting late and the sun was an hour or so away from setting on the horizon.
"Dinner!" I said as I approached the sleeping Sherlock that lay at the base of the tree.
"Yum!" he said jumping to his feet and helping me spread out the blankets for our little picnic.
I passed Sherlock his plate of food and began to eat my own when he got up from across the blanket and sat in my lap. We sat there in silence eating our food and drinking tea. It wasn't an awkward silence, there just wasn't anything to say so we didn't.
When we were done eating I heard Sherlock yawn so I picked up our plates and took them inside. When I came back out Sherlock was snuggled into the blankets fast asleep. Not wanting to wake him I carefully slipped in next to him. He didn't open his eyes but instead turned towards me and snuggled into my chest. I wrapped my arms around his tiny body and promised myself I would never let anything happen to him.
"Goodnight Myc..." he whispered into my chest before he fell completely asleep. The sun was just barely setting on the horizon as I ruffled his hair.
"Goodnight Sherlock." I said as I kissed his fore head and drifted off into sleep...
