Emily POV
I patiently waited for my classroom to fill up. This is my 2nd year teaching and I had to move due to the illness of my mother. I needed to be closer to her since my no good sister was no where to be found. I didn't mind giving up my dreams for the moment to nurse my mother back to health. I mean I only gave up my professor job at NYC Arts Studio to come be an art teacher in little old Grey Strings, Michigan. Again I don't mind. Kids start to fill my room as the bell rings. It filled up pretty quick and minutes later the tardy bell rings.
"Welcome everyone I am Ms Barnes, you may not call me Ms B and its Ms Barnes not Barney" I joked as the class erupted in laughter. I walked around and sat on my desk and crossed my legs to take roll. Everyone was present except one student Lindsey Fisher. Mrs. Sharon told me great things about her. I was definitely looking forward to meeting her. As I put the sheet down someone entered.
There stood a beautiful young lady. Very petite and had an innocent look on her face. She was adorable I thought. I flashed her a smile. She looked impressed by what she saw. The inside of me kind of heated.
Stop.
"Are you okay" I asked. She nodded her head yes.
She took the seat that was in front of me.
"You must be Lindsey Fisher" I asked.
"Yes ma'am" she replied.
"I've heard so many great things about you. So glad to have you in my class" I said as I flash another smile across my face.
Don't know why, but she seemed impressed.
Oddly the rest of the class, she gave me minimum eye contact. And darted out as soon as the bell rang.
The rest of the day went by really fast. Majority of my students seemed like they're going to be fun. My off period approached which happen to be the last period of the day. I decided to just take a tour of the school and see what's it like when its filled with kids.
As I roamed the hall, it was pretty empty. I guess the first day everyone is in line but I doubt it stay like this. I decided to go out to the court yard and enjoy the outside view.
I reached the outside air and noticed Lindsey sitting down and from the looks of it drawing. I decided to join her.
"Mind if I sit and watch" I interrupted as it looked like she was deep in a zone. She looked up and smiled. And nodded her head yes while looking back down.
I sat down and crossed my legs. She kept her eyes on her drawing. I glanced over to see what it was. I was floored at the dynamic of her artwork.
"Wow" slipped out my mouth.
"That's different, would you care to elaborate" she looked at me annoyed. She sighed and shook her head.
"Have you ever felt like were living a life that wasn't meant for you" she asked. Gosh her voice.
"As of lately, yes" I honestly answered.
"Well you have here a person whose real self is slowing unfolding itself. The tears represent joy"
"Joy" I asked confused. She giggled. Mmm.
"Yes joy because even through the pain of exposing who she really is, she knew in the end that this is who she wanted to be. So her life wouldn't be a lie anymore. Its a pain she was willing to take"
I sat their in silence. She was very intelligent for her age. I like her already.
"How old are you Miss Fisher" asking curiosity
"I'm 18 I'll be 19 in November..and before you think I'm dumb and got held back by my parents. Personal issues interfered with my school at one point in my life" she was definitely catching my attention. I wanted to know more.
"Aren't you a senior, why are you still here" I asked
"Well if you must know Ms Barnes, I left and came back. My little brother is a freshman this year and I have to pick him up" smartly answering
"Ok, I see I've asked too many questions. For future reference I have this period off and if you need someone to come, my door is always welcomed to you" she looked at me astonished by my offer.
"I'll keep that in mind thank you" she said as I stood up to walk away. I was feeling something strange. Something I didn't want to explore on.
"See you in the morning Miss Fisher" she giggled.
"Alright Ms Barnes" I walked away knowing that I had been caught staring at her for too long.
As I entered my moms house I could hear her coughing.
"Mom I'm home" I screamed.
She continued to cough. I get her a glass of water and walk upstairs into her room. My mom laid there as her body look so lifeless. I hate seeing her like this. It broke my heart almost everyday.
"Here mom" handing her the water as I sat beside her.
"Hey baby..how was your day" speaking through her coughs.
"It was okay Ma..I'm gonna go get dinner started. Lay back down to get some rest"
I headed back down and opened the fridge to see what to cook.
Nothing. Nothing. Nothing.
Guess I need to go to the store. I grabbed my keys.
"Mom I'll be back call me if you need anything" I yelled as I ran out the door.
