Luke's POV
I sat in my truck, unsure of what to do. Where is he?! I told him over an hour ago I would meet him at the little diner in our town for a special dinner, and that he should walk to get some fresh air and relax beforehand. I pulled out my phone to text him reminding him that we were going out tonight and to hurry when a new audio message appeared. I unlocked my phone and clicked play. There was silence for a while before I heard a man talking. He was being very derogatory and crude. And that's when I finally heard Dylan's voice.
"If there's one thing I've realized after I moved here and met Luke, it's that the past should stay in the past and things do get better. Just because you found me doesn't mean you have to always constantly try to abuse me. It's not worth it," I heard Dylan say.
"Really now? I find that quite odd of you to say, because you wouldn't talk about your past with me so much if you didn't want it to come back," replied the man to Dylan.
"You can't change the past, but you can learn from it. Like, I learned that you are just a pathetic excuse for a person and find joy from hurting people . It won't get you anywhere but a jail cell."
As proud as I was of him standing up for himself, I knew he was in trouble. That had to be Wayne, and based on everything that Dylan had told me, Wayne doesn't just talk.
I started the car and put my auxiliary cable into my phone so I could finish listening to the recording. I sped to his house. I got out of the car, phone in hand, and rang the doorbell.
No answer.
I buzzed again, and again, not stopping until I heard the door unlock. The message had just ended, and I knew where he was. I knew what that douchebag was talking about. His dad flung the door open and looked at me and sighed.
"Where's Dylan?!" He asked, trying not to cry.
"Did you get the message, too?" I asked.
His dad put on a coat and walked outside towards his car, "Yes. But I don't know where he is, do you know where he is, Luke? Please tell me you know."
"I do, listen to the message to the very end. The guy who has him told Dyl where they were. Go to the police and get them to go to the abandoned apartments off of the highway. Make sure they get everyone they can, those apartments are huge. They've been closed for two years because there were large amounts of poison released into them. The people who lived there had to evacuate immediately and leave their stuff behind."
"What are you going to do? Come with me, or go meet his mother at the office. She's freaking out, too."
"I'm going to the apartments."
"You can't go alone. You don't know if he has a weapon or not."
"Oh, he does. Dylan has told me enough about this guy for me to know he's loaded with at least enough stuff to torture him, but I have a knife, so don't worry. If trouble comes my way I'll protect myself. Make sure the police get off of their asses immediately. This could end badly," I said, my voice starting to shake. I ran to my truck and waited for Dylan's dad to drive by before again speeding off to the apartments.
I looked at my phone when I came to a stop light, and finally read the message Dyl sent me, "I love you so much. Don't feel bad. Just be happy."
Tears started falling from my face, and as soon as that light turned green, I slammed on the gas pedal, speeding by multiple cars. Red and blue lights started flickering and a siren soon followed.
This was my chance. I started going 90 in a 75, hoping the cop would follow me to my destination. I made the needed turn to the apartments and stopped my truck, jumping out of it and running to the police car that was now stopped behind me.
"Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to walk back to your vehicle. Were you aware that you were going 15 miles over the speed limit?"
"Yes, sir, I was. And when I saw your lights I knew I had to go faster. Police never listen to dispatch calls, so I'm lucky that you were patrolling." I took my phone out, turned the volume up, and began playing the video from where Wayne started to talk.
"You do realise no threat is clearly being made to this person, right? I can't do anything about this," the cop said, giving me a weird look.
"Are you fucking serious?! We are right here at the apartments where Dylan is probably being tortured, and you say you can't do any fucking thing about it? Get your head out of your ass, people aren't supposed to be in these buildings anyways, you know they're in there, and you still won't do fucking anything about it?! Go! Get in there! If you won't go, I'm fine with doing it by myself. I know they're in there somewhere, and if he's badly hurt, or," I paused, tears streaming down my face, " dead, then it's your fault for not even going in there for trespassers!"
"Calm down, you just admitted to saying you are about to trespass into these buildings, you do realise I can arrest you right now for admitting that?"
"But you won't, now please, sir, my boyfriend is in there and he's been having troubles with this Wayne guy for several years. He wasn't supposed to find Dylan here, it's literally the middle of nowhere!" I began to walk away from the cop car, before jogging towards the apartments. I would do this one way or another, even if it meant I had to go in by myself.
