I was awoken by the sound of voices from downstairs so I sat up and rubbed my eyes. I listened for a moment. It must be Chris’ friends. I slowly got out of bed so I didn’t make myself dizzy. I always did that, I’d get out of bed too fast and my head would start spinning. I looked at the small clock that was on the bedside table and it read ’11:27’. Every day I wake up around this time, never earlier, never later. I went to the mirror and sighed seeing the large black tired circles under my eyes. Even though I went to bed at 5 I repeatedly woke up throughout the night, I always do, it’s the nightmares. I took my hair out the bobble and smoothed it back before retying it up.

I left the bedroom and walked down the stairs following the direction of the voices. I got into the kitchen and saw that they were all around the dining table with breakfast in front of them.

“Morning.” Chris said and they all turned to look at me. They all looked confused. Clearly Chris hadn’t told them about my stay yet.

“Hey.” I said leaning against the kitchen worktop.

“Everyone this is Caitlin.” Chris said and they all smiled at me. “I’ve left you some breakfast, it’s on a plate in the microwave, and it should still be warm though.”

“Thanks.” I said going to the microwave and pulling out the full English breakfast that Chris and made for me. I got a knife and fork and went and sat around the table with them. There were five of them in total, including Chris. I could see them all looking at each other trying to work out who I was and what I was doing in Chris’ house.

“Caitlin this is the band.” Chris said smiling. “This is Max our guitarist…” Max looked smaller than the others, he had big brown eyes and short brown hair that stuck up slightly at the front. He raised his hand in a little wave when I looked at him smiling. “That’s Matt our bassist…” Matt had black hair that was smoothed back so it lifted at the front. He looked like a nice guy, the kind of person who would be happy all the time. “That’s Dan our drummer…” Dan had brown hair that was a lot more refined than the others. It was smoothed back with a parting and not a hair out of place. He smiled at me making his blue eyes shine. “And finally that’s Josh our singer.” Josh had the typical lead singer look. He had messy short brown hair and dark blue eyes. I looked at each of them as Chris said their names and gestured to them so I knew who he was talking about.

“So I guess you all want to know who I am right.” I said and they all slightly nodded. “Chris and I were friends in secondary school and we kind of lost contact since then so we haven’t spoken for like 4 years. Sparing the details my dad is a dick and I couldn’t cope with being with him anymore. My mom ran away with another man so I had nowhere to go. Luckily Chris was kind enough to let me stay with him for a bit. It gets a lot more interesting but we’ll save that for another day.” I looked around the table and it seemed that they all believed me. None of them said anything for a moment.

“So what are you going to do next?” Josh was the first to break the silence while they, all but Chris, studied me.

“I don’t know, I’ll try and get a place somewhere. I need to go home and get some of my stuff and Chris volunteered to help because he knows what my dad is like.”
