The way you crinkle your nose is just one of the many things I love about you. I don’t know, it took me so long to tell you this and it seems unreal that I’m actually taking the time and writing you this meaningful letter. It’s unbelievable Emma. Remember the first time we met? I told you a few weeks later I heard you singing and it became out song to each other when your grandma passed away. I sing to you when you’re upset because you love the sound of my voice, it soothes you. You always told me I could get a singing career. We should’ve done a career together and be called ‘Us’. That would be super cool, huh. Anyways, the first time we met gives me chills thinking about it; it was three whole years ago. Your overalls that you still wear but my handprints are all over them with white paint when we had that paint war.

Neither words nor actions could describe how I feel about her. She was just so perfect. I loved the way Emma smiled at my stupid jokes; I loved the way her nose would crinkle before she told me to shut up. I loved the way she laughed, sing, dance, sleep; she was so beautiful.

That’s what captivated me to her. The first day I met her, it was sudden fate. I feel like I remember like it was yesterday. Her grubby overalls, her long hair falling below her shoulders with that huge book that she always carried every day.

She was so perfect.

Year One – Day One

Scattering around the empty halls of the nursery home, I looked for an available nurse to help me tend my grandfather. He’s been awfully sick for a while now, it’s expecting to see him pass; I’ve prepared myself mentally.

Once I spotted a nurse, I grabbed her attention quickly. “Uh, excuse me, miss?” I grabbed her attention, the blonde whistling turning my way, nodding her head giving me her full attention. “My grandfather needs his meds.” I told her. Once done so, she grabbed his cup of meds and a pint of prune juice, his favorite drink. Following her to his room, I heard the slightest bit of a younger woman singing.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray. You’ll never know dear, how much I love you. Please don’t take my sunshine away.” The beautiful melody swam through my ears, my admiration getting lost in thought as I thought to myself on such a beautiful singing voice. The room where the singing was coming from had the door closed and the tag of ‘do not disturb’ lying in front of it. Following the nurse once again to my grandfather’s room, I watched as he swallowed his pills painfully, engulfing the ten pills together with his dark prune juice.

“You okay, pa?” I asked him lightly, kneeling down to his bed as he shook his head no. The grief showing in his eyes was dreadful; he knew he was going to pass soon. It was just a pain to think of it, but mentally preparing me for when it happens is the best thing I can do.

I’m the only one who takes care of him. My dad, his son, doesn’t really talk to him, or me. I haven’t talked to my father in ages. He hasn’t really talked to anyone else either. I live with my mum and my younger sister, Daniella. She’s a little punk, being only fourteen but knowing every secret of mine, I love her to pieces. She’s my angel, my life, and I would do anything in my right mind to protect her, and my mum.

“Harry,” my grandfather said painfully, the strain in his voice scratching my eardrums. I alarmed to his attention, “can you get me a warm rag.” He asked lightly, pointing his weak finger towards the basket of towels on the windowsill of the nursery home. I nodded my head yes and grabbed a towel, heading to the bathroom to put warm water on it.

Walking in the hallway to the bathroom, I heard the singing again, only this time the door was opened. I looked quickly, the back of a girl with long, brunette hair and overalls. She must’ve been younger, but her voice was soothing.

She lifted herself up from the seat and immediately I scattered to the bathroom, hiding from her. Closing the door behind me, I warmed the rag up with the hot water and reined it out; leaving just the warmness the cloth holds.

“Is somebody in there?” A woman asked, knocking on the door. I called out a yes as they followed with an apology. Walking out the bathroom, I saw the brunette girl with overalls. Her hair cascading down her shoulders, her brown eyes and her tan skin. It was captivating. She was beautiful. She was holding this large, brown leather book. It had to be a thousand pages, at the least.

“All yours.” I say jokingly as she giggled and proceeded to the bathroom. I headed back to my grandfather’s room to give him the warm towel. When I was back in the room, he was sleeping peacefully, snoring slightly with his mouth open agape. I put the warm rag on his forehead, just how he likes it and kissed his cheek.

“Love you, pa.” I told him as I tucked him in lightly with the light blanket the nursery provides the rooms with. I walked out the room and saw the girl walking back to her room.

“Hey.” I said quickly, catching her attention as she turned around, looking back at me. Her mouth smeared into a smile, showing her teeth.

“Hi.” She said simply, blinking her eyes several times. She was hugging her brown leather book to her stomach, overly protective over it.

“Look, I gotta leave but I’m hoping to see you around here again.” I told her as she smirked, her eyes watching me carefully as she opened her mouth to talk.

“Yeah, you will.”

I remember like it was yesterday because it was the best day of my life. It was the day I met her. You are my sunshine, Emma.
