The days were gray and dreary, perhaps because of the gray American uniforms. Penguins had to be given authorization to go anywhere, even to step outside their own property. Any wannabe rebels would be put under guard, on probation, or just get thrown in prison with no trial of any kind.
American penguins were now the rulers of Antarctica; they had taken over the majority of the islands and were laying siege to the main landmass of the southernmost continent in the world.
On Waddle Island, conditions had drastically changed. Freedom was no longer in the inhabitants' vocabulary. Riots often broke out, and several penguins were killed in them each day.
Natives of Waddle Island rarely owned guns; Drake and Dreemo were some of the few that did, and they were confiscated by soldiers when they searched the house for potential weaponry. Steak knives were also confiscated, leaving penguins to use butter knives for their meats at dinner.
Penguins were given ration cards, now that trade routes were blocked from the continent and there were only so many fish in the sea. Some penguins could not get enough to eat, while others stole ration cards from their fellow penguins and ate like pigs.
Dreemo was submissive. He was a passive penguin, one that hated conflict and avoided confrontation whenever he could. Although he seemed cool and tough when he hung around his friends, he would easily buckle under pressure.
Drake, on the other hand, was not so passive. He would not allow the Americans to touch him and sometimes joined the riots; he was now on probation. His nephew insisted that he stop his aggressiveness and just go with the flow, but Drake now knew that he had always gone against the tide back when he was a soldier. Those Americans would not bring him down so easily.
Sammik was greatly inspired by Drake's hostility toward the soldiers, and occasionally joined him in the riots. He began to see Drake as a role model, which made his parents concerned that he would be arrested or killed. Sam assured them that he was his own penguin, and he was now an adult who could make his own decisions.
Fellow was also uncomfortable with Drake and Sam's decision, and often sided with Dreemo when the four of them argued over whether or not they should take action. She obeyed any demands she was given by the Americans, although she had a hidden contempt for them.
So now Felly and Sam were living in Drake's big igloo, because they figured that friends should stick together and back each other up, should trouble occur. Dreemo was happy to be living with his friends, but was taken aback that Sam was now a rebel.
And then there was the issue of Drake's unknown past, now that he was seeing flashes in his mind and bits and pieces of his memory were comig back, only to be forgotten again moments later. Dreemo was quite offended that his uncle hadn't told him about his memory loss, and held a sort of grudge against him. But for now he had to put those feelings aside, because there was no room for strife within the only place of safety they had left: their own igloo.
Drake was beginning to understand why he had scars all over his body, why he was so interested in military equipment, and why he was such an excellent shot with a gun. He was a soldier, an old soldier that had lost his way and found the worst fate a soldier could bring upon himself: peace. But now that the Americans were taking over, there was no more peace. Drake wondered if he should put his old skills to the test, or if he should do as Dreemo had suggested and just go with the flow. He was currently trying to do both.
And now, Dreemo sat against the outside of his igloo, thinking over all of this, wondering if his uncle was right: if they should take action and take back Waddle Island. But Dreemo was no soldier, and until Uncle Drake remembered his younger life, neither was he. In addition to that, they had no weapons whatsoever.
