Chapter 6

On the Monday following the weekend it became all the more real to me that Dave and I were no longer together. I did not receive the 'good morning babe' text. I did not feel the familiar flittering of my heart in my chest.

The cover of John Mayer's 'Dreaming With a Broken Heart' by Airto began playing through my shower iPod speaker, and I broke down then and there. Naked and alone.

I don't know how I had made it through the weekend, but it was a false hope to think I was really over him.

Wondering, "Could you stay my love?

Will you wake up by my side?"

No she can't, 'cause she's gone, gone, gone, gone, gone....

Was he feeling the same way that I was?

Is his heart breaking knowing that he will never wake up next to me anymore?

He's not. And it was silly of me to even think that he could feel that way about me. I was just his high school girlfriend. He's in college now, moving on to bigger and better things.

When my sobs finally subsided I dragged myself out of the shower and tried to make myself presentable.

A familiar buzzing from my phone sent me eagerly rolling over my bed to read the text.

Hey, are you ok? I heard crying...

The text read from my brother.

It was sad to think that it would be actually from him. That he'd actually care enough to check up on me.

I walked out of my room towards Owen's.

"Yeah, I'm fine." I sighed. He crossed the room and gave me a big bear hug, enveloping me in his body.

My little brother comforting me! I should be the one helping him, not the other way around.

"I don't know what's wrong, but you don't have to tell me until you're ready." He rushed, the words fumbling out of his mouth.

"Thanks, Owe." New tears began forming in my eyes, but I cleared my throat to stop the crying. "Let's go to school, hm? I'll let you drive..."

"I'll meet you in the car!" He shouted excitedly over his shoulder as he grabbed his backpack and bounded down the stairs.

I followed him down the stairs and reached for a banana in our fruit bowl at the same time as my mother. Our hands touched and in her pale blue eyes I could see she was startled from the contact we had made.

"Uh, you can have it." I retreated.

She smiled a contrived smile. "Thanks. Remind your brother and sister that I need you all here for dinner at 7, preferably earlier since i want you all to be preasentable. I'm hosting an up and coming big hotel exec and I'm trying to set up a merger."

I nodded simply. "Will do."

"Don't be late." She added feverishly, accustomed to my usual tardiness.

"I got it mom." I replied as I settled on an apple instead and headed out the door.

Owen and I made our way to school as he drove excitedly, yet calmly. He parked in a prime spot close to the school and we made our separate ways into the school after he handed me my keys.

"Hey! Remember: home by 7, tell Jen if you see her."

"Yes, sir!" He mock saluted.

I knew upon entering the hallways school would be a blur for me. I had to force my short frame through the crowded hallway most of the time, and I just knew that my recent breakup would be a hot topic for gossip.
