Steve like routines. No surprises.
He liked his apartment block, the neighbours were nice, there was rarely any parties, his friends lived nearby and the guy up stairs had a cat who would visit Steve on the balcony sometimes. It was a pretty good set up. Routine, quiet and calm.
No surprises.
What didn't fit into said routine was the man covered in flour knocking on his front door.
"You're Steve right? The guy who my cat likes?" The man asked, huffing as if he ran down the stairs to get to him.
"Yeah that's me.Sorry about that, she gets down on her own and..." Steve began apologising, not wanted to get yelled at for stealing a cat. He knew the guy in his doorway now, James he was sure. That's the owners name on the cats collar anyway.
"No no no, it's not about Chloe- although she's not great with people so well done."James smiled easily before raising an arm to rub at the back of his neck. "I actually came for a favour?" He asked sheepishly. "You see my friend Natasha said she knew this big built, blonde guy who lived in my block who was incredible at baking. And well, since that seems to be you..." he gestured to his flour covered ensemble, "I could use some help."
Steve tried to contain his laughter at the other man's state. His whole left side was covered in flour, some even clingy to the free strands of his bun. It was quite the sight.
"You have the ingredients in your flat or do you want to learn here?" Steve asked.
"Wait, you'll help?" James asked, grinning and bouncing on the balls of his feet. "Because the party is in 2 hours."
"Plenty of time, come on in."
~
James exited the flat over an hour later with a freshly baked and decorated cake, as well as a phone number scribbled on his hand.
Steve had a very messy kitchen and a flour handprint on his ass, which was quite the surprise
He actually hoped James from upstairs would surprise his routine more often, he could see himself falling for the punk.
"I hope you're friend likes the cake James!" Steve called from the door with a smile.
"He will man, it looks incredible." He said sincerely, before turning around. "Bucky."
"What?"
"My friends. They call me Bucky. Just so, y'know, you know what to save me as in your phone." He winked, before heading up the stairs.
Steve shook his head with a fond grin, closing the door.
Yeah, Bucky was the best change in routine he ever had.
