6:50 AM. I open my eyes and stretch my left arm to the side. I grab my phone and press the snooze button. Time to get up. I rub my eyes and move the duvet to the side whilst I sit up on my bed. I stand up, walk towards my wardrobe, and take out my school uniform. I start to get ready for school, doing the usual stuff: brushing my teeth, fixing my fringe, and going downstairs to prepare some breakfast for myself.

Mum walked into the kitchen a few minutes after I poured some milk on top of my choco pops and mumbles a tired "good morning". She walks up to the coffee machine and starts to brew some coffee. After that, she sat in front of me and looked at me while I ate. "Is everything alright?" I ask while she stares at me tiredly, "Yeah, I'm just really tired. I barely got any sleep because of an emergency call from work last night and had to rush off to the office until, like, 4 AM or something. I feel awful." I swallow my last spoonful of cereal and pick up my bowl. "Geez, I hope that at least they're grateful for what you're doing for them now," I said as I walk towards the kitchen sink and place my bowl inside it. "I mean, without you they would probably be bankrupt or somethin'. Or well, maybe not bankrupt, but you know what I mean."

"I don't know, maybe." She says as she pours some of the already brewed coffee into her black mug. It's been a long time since I've had a conversation with mum. It felt good. "Anyway, Phil, let's talk about you. How are things at school? Are you still friends with Dan?" I sit down again in my seat and look at her. "Dan? Yeah we are. Actually, we walk together to school every morning." I look at the oven clock and read '7:15 AM' from the green digital numbers. "You do?" Mum asked while she spread some marmalade on her toast. "That sounds nice, I remember when I used to walk to college with my friends in the morning, talking about boys and makeup and singers, you know, the usual teenage-girl stuff." I laugh at her comment. "Yeah," I say as I stand up, "it's really refreshing to talk about whatever with a friend before school starts." I hear a soft 'mmm' from her and that's when I decide to go get my rucksack and my keys. "I gotta run mum, I should go wake up Dan."

"Wake up Dan? Why would you do that?" She looks at me with a confused look. "Because he spends too much time on the internet and if I don't wake him up he'll just miss school and get angry at me." I say laughing as I walk towards the front door, mum walking right behind me. Strange. "Love ya, mum." I say as I kiss her on the forehead and then walk out the door.

I look at my phone clock. 7:25 AM. That conversation with mum took longer than what it had felt, but it was nice. I start to head towards Dan's house; he lives just a few blocks away from my house, and that's why it's really nice to be friends with him. We can always hang out and listen to Muse or play video games for hours, and then just walk a few minutes and be home before our mums murder us for being late. Or well, his mum. My mum doesn't spend much time at home, so she doesn't really know when I get home.

I get to Dan's door and decide to call his cellphone. "Mmhhm, hello?" I hear him say at the other end of the line. "Good morning, Dan. Are you ready or?" I ask as I pace around their entrance a bit. His family had different types of plants and flowers everywhere, giving it a hippy-like atmosphere. "Shit, school, I forgot." I hear him say quickly before he hangs up on me. A few seconds later he unlocks the front door and let's me go inside his small, home-like house. The total opposite from mine. "Just woke up?" I say laughing at him as he ran inside his room. "Shut up!" I hear him yell from a distance. I smile a little as I walk in his main hallway, looking at different pictures of him and his family. Some old, some new.

Dan runs out of his room and into the kitchen, and is approaching me as fast as he did that. He's holding a Nutella sandwich in his right hand and his black rucksack on his left. "How many hours did you spend on Tumblr yesterday night before going to sleep, eh?" He glares at me and scoffs before saying, "Uh, how do you know I was on Tumblr? I could've been reading a book, or working on my math assignment." We pause for a bit so that he can pull out his home keys and lock the door. "Daniel James Howell. You're my best friend, and I know you more than anyone knows you. Are you seriously going to tell me that you did your homework yesterday evening?" We start to walk towards school, which was just a few minutes away from his house. This town was pretty small, and it doesn't take long to walk to different places.
