WE RAN WEST.
The dense woods along with the mist made it impossible to see. The moonlight above us was almost nonexistent. Haylee and I ran behind the boy, who somehow had a lot better vision than us. He still held his hands to avoid trees and shrubs but by the way he was running, I didn't think he needed to.
I took a look behind us whenever a clearing in the woods approached. There hadn't been anything following us since we got off the highway. It seemed as if we were running from nothing.
But that wasn't the case. There was something in the mist, something big, with wings the size of cars. I couldn't make out exactly what it was because the boy grabbed Haylee and I before the mist had cleared. Neither of us asked any questions. I was still horrified after seeing a live murder while Haylee was still too high to comprehend anything.
When a light appeared in the distance, we stopped.
"What is it?" I asked.
The boy got down on one knee and narrowed his eyes. He stared at the light for a few moments before getting back up. "Probably a house."
"A house?" I was ecstatic. "We should go and see if they can help. Maybe they know what's going on or can call the cops or something?"
He stayed quiet, staying focused on what I presumed to be a porch light. I had been trying to figure him out since we met. He was quiet unless spoken to. When he did speak, it was always intense and straight forward. He was very fit, as evident by the shirt-ripping muscles he had. But what I found strange was his back. I hadn't noticed it until we started running behind him. He had some sort of growth just below his shoulders. I wanted to ask him about it but figured this wasn't the right time.
Haylee was leaned up against a tree behind us, her breathing heavy. "I feel like I'm burning up."
"Yeah," I turned to her. "Well that's what you get when you take X."
"Oh spare me, please!" She threw her hands up.
"Quiet." The boy said.
I turned to him looking for guidance. There was something about him leading us that made me feel safe, even though I knew I shouldn't trust a strange, especially one who ripped the heart from an evil little girl.
He walked over to Haylee and put his hand on her forehead.
"Well hello there." Haylee said with a smile as her eyes wondered up and down his body.
"She hot." He said.
I rolled my eyes. "Please don't boost her already enormous ego."
"Jealous much?" Haylee looked at me.
"No," the boy said. "She's burning up. We need to get her temperature down or she might get brain damage."
"Trust me," I replied. "Nobody would even notice."
Haylee looked at me with disgust. "Hey!"
His smile was kind and welcoming, like that of a child. It was the first time he smiled, the first time he showed a normal reaction. It was nice to see considering the situation we found ourselves in.
"Let's go." He said with a smile, pulling Haylee along with him.
My knowledge of ecstasy was very limited but he seemed very concerned about her body temperature needing to get lower. Haylee might be a blonde bimbo, but she's my best friend. I wanted her safe and alive, so I trucked right along, following them both towards the light.
