Ryder's POV
The fire's warmth embraced us as we sat beside each other. The flames danced and put on a show as it crackled over the dry firewood. I hugged myself, tucking my legs under my chin. My long white hair formed a ring in the red dusty sand, as I sat there, waiting for the 4 rabbits to cook above the fire. Johan sat next to me. I had noticed Johan was of average build and seemed very thin. He had shaggy auburn hair that seemed to have been grown for a while. I could sense his dark brown eyes upon me and I instantly turned. Our eyes met and he quickly turned away. Jonah looked like the rabbits I had previously killed. Scared and unknowing of what would happen next, but accepting. Jonah, still averting his gaze from mine quietly asked me;
"So... How can you kill Infected Ones?"
I stayed still and gazed at the dusty crimson sand beneath my feet.
"It's my sword... It's made out of a special metal called Ardaium. Ardaium is very strong and usually bound with rituals and enchantments. With its strng magic and the hardness and sharpness of the sword combined it can kill anything..."
He looked at me with cold and frightened eyes. I knew how he felt. For such a dangerous thing to be in this world was scary. I looked at my sword which was in front of me. It gloweed from the aura of the magic and it glistened in the light of the flames.
"Yes. Ardaium is a scary thing." I whispered.
I turned and shuffled towards him.
"Tell me... Are you alone? And how did you come all the way here. This place is supposed to be completely abandoned." I said with a solemn smile. It was so rare to see anyone alive. The boy looked up at me with slightly scared eyes.
"My family was killed by these things and I've been trying to find other human life. You're the first person I've seen for a very long time." he whispered.
I nodded in sympathy. "Countless people have been turned or killed by the Infected Ones. I estimate that there is roughly only about 10% of people in the world that are still alive. I come from a group of people where 4% of that figure resides. We are the Hikuge Warriors. We are trained to fight the Infected Ones and our goal is to track down the Master of the Infected. He calls himself the 'King of Infection'. He has communicated to our group before and we plan to bring him down."
I looked at Johan with a very intent gaze.
"I'm a scout and I have been trained to kill Infected Ones and try to find and rescue any people I come across."
I moved closer to him and directly faced him.
"Please come with me back to the base. Join our forces."

JOHAN'S POV
Ryder stared at me intensely as she declared her proposition. I was taken a back a little however I agreed with a nod. What else could I do? I had nowhere to go. I was still intimidated by her 'group' that she mentioned but maybe I could be of use to bringing down the sick person that brought this down onto the world.
I know I have a potentially large intellect however I prefer to keep quiet. Maybe my intellect could be of use in throwing the madman that caused all this.
I was known as the village genius. Everyone knew how smart I was but to be honest it was unbearable. People pestered me wherever I went trying to sap me dry of knowledge. I hated it. I was always isolated and an outcast. Everyone was the same. Greedily seeking information and questioning me about things.
And the worst thing was my family sold me out.
Before the Day of Infection they were talking about sending me to the Military Forces and to the King for an extensive sum of money. I couldn't believe it...

One Week Ago
Johan's POV
I was in my room reading a book when I heard a commotion in the living room. As quietly as I could I tip-toes over to the door of the living room. I opened the door a slight crack and watched the scene that was unfolding before me. I saw my parents fighting over something.
My father was tall with shaggy brown hair, dark brown eyes hidden behind a pair of glasses and had a stubble of a beard. My dad was a regular shaver and liked to keep his face clean. I guessed that from his lack of a clean face he's been very stressed or distracted for the past few days. That raised the question as to why he was so distracted. his work as I knew was coming along swimmingly which is the same as my mother. My mother was blonde, shorter and had brown eyes. She also wore glasses and had a habit of polishing her glasses when she was very stressed or thinking about something. Judging by how clean her glasses were I assumed she was in the same state as my father.
"Why won't you let me do this?" My mother whisper screamed at my father through her gnashing teeth.
"This isn't morally right Joan! We can't sell out our own child!!" My father yelled back only with more aggression than my mother.
"Hahahha.... Don't you see? If we give him to them we could be millionaires... no BILLIONAIRES IN ONE SINGLE NIGHT! I understand why you feel bad but this is just ONE child. We can always adopt a child or make another but Johan is ONE in a million. A chance like this isn't going to happen again!"
"But what if the Government abuses him? Pushes him to the edge? If we're sending him away to the army I need to know he will be safe." My father yelled as he waved around his hands in distress. It was obvious he wasn't okay with this. But he was also willing to do it.
"Once we send him away he won't be our problem." My mother said coldly. And with that tears started falling down my cheeks and I started shaking against the door frame, holding it for support.
My parents turned. Our eyes met.
"No, no, no Johan it isn't what it looks like!" My father said reaching out to me. I slapped his hand away with such aggression and ferocity that it surprised even myself.
While my father and I continued to argue my mother stood there with cold eyes.
"Leave him alone Steve." She said with a blank expression.
"Johan, get ready to pack your things for tomorrow."
Shocked at these words I turned on my heel and stormed out of the house, a cocktail of anger, wrath and despair bubbling and brewing in my stomach.
"I hate them." I venomously spat as I walked as far away as I could from the wretched house.
"I'm not going. There's nothing those two-faced scheming SHITS can do to make me." I whispered. Never had I felt such a feeling of betrayal in all the years of being used. I couldn't believe it.
"I'll find a way to make them pay."
Then the Infection happened.
