in my english class, the only actual class i enjoy, my teacher and i had a small discussion about what was going on in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. the comparison of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn is one that particularly intrigues me for some odd fucking reason.
tom always has this need to go the long way about things and it pisses me off, but he does it with the intention that it will make a good story. tom frequently depends on knowledge he acquired from reading fictional books which leads me to the idea that his desire is to be part of that kind of fictional action. see, when i think of this, i head down this path of abstract ideas that have no fucking structure what so ever. my understanding of tom sawyer is that he wishes to be the main character of the fictional tales that he also wishes to write, and there is nothing wrong with that. however, he takes on a type of stature that is superior compared to huck.
huck, on the other hand, has even acknowledged the fact that he is a character inside of a story written by mark twain in the very first page of the book. the idea that he knows that this is fiction separates him from all the other characters immediately. as the story progresses, huck is faced with many choices that again, pull him out of the black and white ideologies and takes him into the shades of grey.
huck had to kill himself in a metaphorical way, in order to get the freedom he desired. he recognized the simpler way in life and saw no point in the over-exaggeration of situations, unlike tom.
why i called this chaos? well, because when we have structure: rules, set in stone morals, predisposed ideas; there is less thinking and more doing what we are told. in pure chaos there is just the situation and the individual who has to decide what to do. huck goes through the story finding his own morals and ideas on what is right and wrong. he is developing himself based on what he experiences first hand rather than what the bible or tom tells him.
in chaos we find out the reality of things, as cruel and as beautiful as life can be; chaos is freedom. does that make any sense? i hope so.
