Chapter 7, The World For Who it Has Become

About 4 weeks or one moon later, Kamatz and his family was still generally safe and sound. He hadn’t told them about the patrol, but he noticed several other groups of wolves pass by since, investigating the traces of wolves found where (as Kamatz found out) the Moonlight Shadows pack’s territory is. So basically, Kamatz and his family were on their territory.

One morning, Kamatz woke before the others once again, and decided he needed to get some fresh air and go for a walk through the forest. He checked to see that there weren’t any patrols to find him before he went down the mountain, through the small space of no covering whatsoever, and into the safety of the trees. He breathed deeply and quickly grew bored of walking through the forest where he had memorized every leaf, every branch, and every rock. He decided to hunt instead.

It was a surprisingly short time before he found the herd of buffalo that seemed to hang around this place quite often. He quickly brought one down that was easily big enough to feed at least seven wolves, let alone two and their pups, even if the pups ate a lot.

Kamatz had just eaten for a minute or two when the scent hit him, Moonlight Shadows pack members. As if on cue, four of them stalked out of the bushes, growling and hungry-looking.

It was Majesta, Abaven, Fravardin, and a fourth wolf Kamatz didn’t recognize with a black coat like Majesta’s.

“So you’re the mangy mutt that’s been stealing our prey and living off our land?” the unknown wolf growled.

Fravardin took one look at Kamatz (who was small-looking because he was still low to the ground by his kill) and sneered, “Why you’re no bigger or better than a scavenging, low-down, mange-ridden, fox-hearted, badger-faced, flea-biting, moss-sucking rogue!”

Kamatz growled but remained crouched over his kill, determined not to let these heartless wolves have a nip at what should be his pups’ and mate’s.

Abaven laughed evilly as he said, “Too much of a coward to stand and face us? Or are you a poor, whimpering pup?”

Kamatz stood up and all of the wolves immediately yelped in surprise as Kamatz stood to over twice their size, though Fravardin still tried to put on a brave face.

Kamatz knew he had them now as he said to Fravardin, “Would you like to say that again, wolves? If that’s what you say you are?”

The russet wolf wavered a bit as his tail slipped between his legs and his ears lowered slightly. “Y-y-you have n-no r-right to be on our l-land y-y-y—“ he faltered but Majesta nudged him and he got better, remembering he had reinforcements, he repeated, “You have no right to be on our land you low-down, mange-ridden, fox-hearted, badger-faced, flea-biting, moss-sucking ROUGUE!”

Everything grew tense as Kamatz’s stormy blue eyes froze over and took on an icy, ferocious hue seemingly. Fravardin somehow managed not to hare away with his tail between his legs and Kamatz glared at him even harder.

With a roar, Kamatz swung his paw too fast for Fravardin to react and he went flying away before hitting a tree. Immediately the others reacted and attacked Kamatz but the giant wolf manage to escape serious wounds. Majesta jumped on top of him and dug her claws in to keep from being thrown off but instead, Kamatz rolled over and crushed her. Abaven tried to crash into him but Kamatz was much too big and strong so the smaller wolf just hurt himself.

Then Kamatz took the offensive and raked his front claws down the last wolf’s flank and bit down on Abaven’s tail. Abaven scurried a ways away and Kamatz saw the unnamed wolf fall to the ground in a pool of blood. Then the remaining three wolves crashed into Kamatz and managed to hold him down on his stomach.

Fravardin leaned in close to his ear and whispered, “You’re going to remember my face as you die, and you will regret coming onto our territory.”

Kamatz didn’t try to escape too much, these wolves may be trying to kill him, but they were Salena’s family. He couldn’t hurt his mate like that. Then Fravardin slowly sunk one claw into his pelt and slowly dragged it from shoulder to shoulder, making Kamatz howl in pain. He remembered the fact that Fravardin despised Salena in the first place, and with a roar he flung all three wolves off of his back.

Kamatz grabbed the nearest wolf, no name, in his claws and though the wolf was nearly dead already, he swung him into a tree, killing the wolf instantly. Then he grabbed Majesta as she tried to flee and tore her back with his claws as she scratched his muzzle. He tossed her aside and leaped at Fravardin, pinning him down.

“And you will remember my face as I let you die quickly and painlessly like a true, dignified wolf, unlike you fox-hearted, rotten-skinned, brainless, mouse-sized, blood-sucking, heartless cowards,” Kamatz said as he swiftly killed Fravardin with a bite to the neck.

He swiftly pinned Abaven down and told him, with a tear running down his blood-stained cheek, “Your pack made me do this. And you go tell your heartless pack members that if you ever come near my beloved mate Salena, or our pups, the same will happen to all of you.”

He let Abaven go after severely injuring him with multiple deep gashes along his flank and face. He watched the wolf limp quickly away, leaving a thick trail of blood.

Kamatz turned to the three dead wolves around him as another tear rolled down his cheek and repeated, “You made me do this.” He quickly added, “You chose to harm me and bring war between our packs. My pups will grow stronger and if your pack lays so much as half a claw on Concealed Moon pack territory, we will kill every one of you.”

As the wolf slowly stalked away, he thought of his sister Kahoko. His sister that knew he was alive and never even attempted to find him. The wolf that knew he was alone and suffering without her or a pack, looked on, leaving him to perish in the harsh winter months. The wolf that had been by his side when things were grim, had abandoned him for her own selfish reasons. The wolf he once cared for no longer existed.

More than three wolves died that day. Kamatz, the gullible, stupid, mindless pup, that believed every wolf was always kind and cared for everyone they met, was gone, never to be seen again.

In his place was Kamatz, the adult wolf that saw the wolf world for what it was. Kamatz, the wolf that could defeat more than four wolves with nothing but a few scratches to show for it. Kamatz, the wolf that would defend his mate and pups with his life from any threat whether it be the Moonlight Shadows pack, disease, eagles, bears, badgers, and his once-beloved sister.

“Kahoko, this is your last chance. It’s either me, or those foxes that never once cared for you and never will. You are my sister and I can forgive you for what you’ve done, but only if you see your pack for who they are,” the white wolf growled as the sun set behind him, leaving the world in darkness.
