~ I am considering making POV chapters from Salena and Kahoko for training and maybe an entire book on Kahoko’s POV throughout the story. Plz comment your thoughts on these ideas! ~
Chapter 9, Training and a Confrontation
Kamatz was the first one awake the next day, right before the sun rose. He went to the edge of the cave and waited a short while until the first bits of sun appeared over the horizon. He turned around and saw his pups, mate, and sister huddled together comfortably.
He did a quiet howl to awaken his family, but made sure the Moonlight Shadows pack wouldn’t be able to hear him.
As they all stirred and noticed how early it was, he explained, “I figured it would be best to wake up early, before the other pack. That way we can learn our current situation and be wide awake by the time they send out patrols. I also decided that if we come face-to-face with a patrol while hunting or training, or they find a trail to us of some kind, we kill them all but one, which we severely injure so the pack gets another warning. Although at times it may be best to kill them all.”
Kamatz and the others knew that what they were doing was pretty cruel, but not as cruel as the Moonlight Shadows pack. And the Concealed Moon pack needed a place to live. After this thought went through their minds, the others nodded in agreement.
Kamatz looked them over and said, “For the next five days, I will take Keelia, Aatu, Ryker, and Kawthar to train them in hunting, which can train them to hunt our rivals. The next five days I will take Borvo, Kanai, Brayan, and Nadan to do the same. Then the next five I will take Senka, Luna, and Aden.”
He gave it time for it to sink in. Then Salena said, “I will start on the first five days with Borvo, Kanai, Brayan, and Nadan and teach them about different herbs and healing techniques. Then I will take Senka, Luna, and Aden, and lastly, Keelia, Aatu, Ryker, and Kawthar.”
Kahoko then said, “I will start by training Senka, Luna, and Aden how to fight in open plains and forest, then Keelia, Aatu, Ryker, and Kawthar. And lastly Borvo, Kanai, Brayan, and Nadan.”
“So we have the first fifteen days planned out. The next three days we will take a break and decide what to do the rest of the time. The food my team catches will be stored at the back of the den and should feed us for the next moon at least,” Kamatz said.
“Split into your groups and go to your first mentor,” Salena commanded the pups in a gentle tone.
Keelia, Aatu, Ryker, and Kawthar padded over to Kamatz, Borvo, Kanai, Brayan, and Nadan made their way to their mother, and Senka, Luna, and Aden went to Kahoko.
“Meet back at the den an hour before sundown?” Kahoko suggested, looking at Kamatz and Salena. The two nodded and they all left with their groups to their destinations.
Kamatz lead the four of his pups to the hunting grounds when they came close, Kamatz turned around and began talking to his group, “Today we will practice stalking prey and using the most commonly used hunting style.”
He looked around, making sure they were listening. “Kawthar, what do you smell?”
Immediately the three-foot tall pup lifted his nose into the air and inhaled through his nose loudly.
“I smell,” he paused to make sure he was right, “mostly small prey like mice and robins, but it also smells like…elk.”
