Early the next morning Haymitch was awoken by the smell of bacon. His eyes shut up, and the empty bed was left behind as a mess as Haymitch ran down the stairs to the kitchen. There he could see Effie with her back turned to him, humming to herself, not recognizing Haymitch as he stood on the first step on the stairs. Apparently she hadn't heard the heavy footsteps rushing down the stairs.
Haymitch looked over her shoulder without making a sound, trying not to even breath. But the smell was so delicious, and he wanted to inhale it in deep breaths. He saw the dark red bacon sizzling in the fryingpan.
Haymitch tried to control himself, but realized that he would not be able to for much longer. So he used his last strength to jump up behind Effie, hugging her from behind. She flinched, before turning around in his arms, smiling brightly up at his face.
"Haymitch! You scared me!" She exclaimed smiling.
"Sorry, sweetheart," Haymitch laughed, looking over at the bacon. "Is that breakfast?"
"Yes, I was planning on making you the perfect breakfast before the train arrives," Effie explained while pushing the bacon from one side to another with a spatula, so it didn't get burned.
"Well it looks delicious!" Haymitch sighed happily. The girl of his dreams were standing in his arms in her nighties, making bacon for breakfast. Could this morning make him happier. For once he didn't wish to be drunk. He wanted to remember every second of this holiday with Effie."Haymitch, come on! We don't want to miss the train!" Effie was shouting at Haymitch from outside the house, jumping up and down so that she didn't get cold.
"I am coming!" Effie heard Haymitch yell from inside the house. He came out carrying three bags, two of them that were Effie's. She hadn't asked him to carry them, he had insisted.
"Oh, Haymitch, you look like you're going to fall over! I can carry my own bags!" Effie said in a worrrying voice.
"No, no! I can carry them to the train!" Haymitch insisted.
"You are like a stubborn goat! Fine, If you insist. Let's see how far you can come carrying all the bags," Effie said smirking at him.
They got pretty far, almost to the train station, before Haymitch collapsed.
"Haymitch, are you ok?" Effie asked trying not to fall over by laughing so hard.
"I am fine," Haymitch said in a gruff voice. He hurried and picked up all the bags from the ground
"Here," Effie said wiping away a tear. "Let me take at least one bag,"
Haymitch gave Effie the tiniest bag of them all.
Soon they were carrying all the bags into the train.
"Well, we have some time before we can get dinner, what should we do?" Effie asked, looking over the beautiful entrance of the train.
"Well, there is some time before we reach district 1. We could sit down, and you can tell me all about the capitol," Haymitch suggested while taking some of the white cookies from a tray.
"You really want to listen to me talk?" Effie asked doubting.
"I really do," Haymitch smiled at Effie before eating the whole cookie in one bite."Haymitch!" Effie screamed from her bedroom at 02:00am in the morning the night before they arrived in district 1.
Immediatley, Haymitch came running. Effie was sitting straight up in her bed, shivering like crazy.
"Effie! What's wrong?" Haymitch asked worried.
"Bad dream," Effie answered whispering. "It felt so real,"
"What was the dream about?" Haymitch asked, and sat himself next to Effie.
"I was in capitol. Somewhere at least. I didn't know where I was, I only knew I was in capitol. They came. Three masked men. Most likely peacekeepers. The things they did to me. Trying to get information I didn't have. And no one came to save me," Effie cried silently.
Haymitch's heart broke as he realized that this is what had happened to her during the rebellion, when he couldn't come to save her.
"But you are awake now. I'm here, and those men will never get to you anymore," Haymitch whispered soothingly, stroking Effie's hair as he spoke. Slowly, Effie stopped shaking, and started to fall asleep again. She grabbed Haymitch's hand weakly just as he tried to rise.
"Don't leave me," Effie whispered right before she fell asleep in Haymitch's side, with her head resting on his shoulder.
Haymitch put her slowly down, making sure she didn't wake up or leave his side, and laid back next to her.
"Never," Haymitch whispered as he also fell asleep with the scent of Effie's breath lingering in his nose.
