"Don't do this, Mark. Don't do it!" she shouted, nearly hysterical.
Mark stood by the door, the sight of Sadie crumpled on the floor, her head in her hands, nearly breaking his resolve. Everything within him wanted to run to her, gather her in his arms and kiss away the hurt he was causing her.
"I don't want to do this, Sadie. The last thing I want to do is hurt you, but this is for the best. You deserve more than I can give you," he said, his throat growing tight as he looked up at the ceiling, willing himself to keep it together.
When he chanced another glance at her, his eyes locked with hers. Those sparkling eyes of her were flashing with fire now. She stared him down, anger and hurt smoldering in her gaze. Without any warning she jumped up and ran to him, hitting his chest as she wailed, "How dare you do this! How dare you throw away everything! I love you!"
He grabbed her wrists to stop the assault. "Damn it, Sadie! I love you, too! That's why I'm walking away. Don't you see that? We can never make this work. We're from two different worlds, we're more than a decade apart in age and I'm...I'm not good enough for you," he said, staring at her tear-stained face, his eyes darting down to her slightly parted lips, wanting more than ever to kiss her at least one more time.
"You're kidding me right? I don't care about any of that! I love you, only you. I want you. I can't believe you even said that you aren't good enough. That is crazy. I know you have a heart bigger than anyone I've ever met, that you make me feel alive, in your arms I'm home. You can't walk out on what we finally have happening between us," she whispered, laying her head against his chest in surrender.
He let go of her wrists, and paused with his hands in the air, contemplating what he should do, trying to resist temptation and stick to his resolve before giving in and wrapping his hands around her slender frame, burying his face in her hair. It was the sweetest of surrenders– a weight felt lifted as they stood there locked in one another's arms.
How could he have ever thought he would be able to walk away from this epic love?
He'd always questioned people's sanity when they raved like lunatics about soulmates and destiny– assuming they were overly dramatic or something. He could act it out– all the feelings were perfect for dancing, but in his personal life, he'd always figured if he had someone that he shared interests with, could kick around with– that was good enough.
Until Sadie happened to him, that is. Sadie wrecked him, utterly wrecked him for anyone else.
And as Sadie clung to him, he knew he'd done the same thing to her. He'd thought walking away from this crazy love was what was best for them, but clearly that wasn't going to solve anything.
She lifted her head to look up at him, her eyes searching his face, begging him not to go.
"Sadie, I can't leave you. It's impossible. I know I should. I know this is wrong, but I can't imagine walking out this door and never seeing you again. Call me selfish, but I can't do it. And even if I did, I would be back– I could never stay away from you no matter how hard I tried."
"I don't want you to leave. I don't understand why you thought you should. I don't think I've ever know hurt like I did the moment you said you were ending things between us," she said, tearing up again.
"I'm so sorry I hurt you. I won't ever do something so stupid again," he told her, kissing her cheek, her jawline, her neck and her collarbone before coming back up and finally settling on her lips.
"Make sure you don't," Sadie warned, sighing as she closed her eyes and tilted her head back as he trailed kisses down her neck once more.
