story by: therainyoulove
You should've been there, Should've burst through the door, With that 'baby I'm right here' smile, And it would've felt like, A million little shining stars had just aligned, And I would've been so happy.
How you said you'd be here You said you'd be here.
Sadie felt bad. No scratch that, she felt terrible. It was her birthday today, and it was going miserably. Everything about the party was picture-perfect – the decorations were amazing, the venue was her favourite place ever, the cake was delicious. Everything was perfect, except for one thing – he wasn't here.
He promised her he would be, but he wasn't. It would've been so easy, Sadie thought. All he had to do was to walk through the door with that smile of his, and she would've forgiven him in a heartbeat.
And the hours pass by, Now I just wanna be alone, But your close friends always seem to know when there's something really wrong, So they follow me down the hall
And there in the bathroom, I try not to fall apart, And the sinking feeling starts, As I say hopelessly, "He said he'd be here."
She struggled to keep up with everybody, they were all so happy. She should be the happiest, she's surrounded by her family and friends, the people who love her with all their hearts. But she can't.
She just can't stay in this all-too-cheery environment, so she left the room.
But of course, Sadie being the ever-smiling, happy person she is, everyone notices something is wrong is with her. They asked her what's wrong – and to that question she wants to be melodramatic and answer, 'what's not?!'.
But she doesn't, because she really does not want to deal with anyone right now. So she finds a corner to sit in, and tries to take the party in, tries to revel in the wonderful, incredible celebration of her turning 19. She can't, though.
All she can do right now is think about how he said he would come, yet he didn't.
And it was like slow motion, Standing there in my party dress, In red lipstick, With no one to impress, And they're all laughing, As I'm looking around the room, But there was one thing missing.
She dressed up for him. She put on her favourite dress that she knows he loves too, and red lipstick. He loved her in red, and he never failed to mention it. But then again, there's not much mentioning required when his face tells you everything perfectly.
She smiles at the memory – the first time he saw her in the color, his jaw dropped, his eyes widened, and for a second he couldn't get words out of his mouth. She remembers blushing furiously at his response, and him telling her how beautiful she looked with such awe that it made her heart beat a million times a minute.
So she's her, wearing red lipstick, but with him not there. And she doesn't care for anyone else's praise much, it was his she wanted. And he's anywhere but here.
What do you say When tears are streaming down your face, In front of everyone you know? And what do you do when the one Who means the most to you, Is the one who didn't show?
She couldn't control it anymore, so she let it out. She couldn't ever stop herself from crying anyway. She was a crier, everyone knew that.
So when she's straight-out bawling in front of all the guests, they assume it's from happiness. The happiness of turning 19, getting into college, starting a new life.
That's so far from the truth though, and it makes Sadie even sadder, if it's possible. What else what she supposed to do anyway? Run around and be all merry? Because that, she was not. He wasn't there. He should've been.
You should've been here. And I would've been so happy.
And it was like slow motion, Standing there in my party dress, In red lipstick, With no one to impress, And they're all standing around me singing, Happy Birthday to you, But there was one thing missing, And that was the moment I knew.
And when blows the candles and cuts the cake, she makes a wish for him. To see him today, at least once. Somehow, somewhere, she just wants to see him.
She wants him to come running through the door, apologizing for being late, and she'd make a comment about how he always is. She would be mad at him for a while, but she knows she would have eventually forgiven him before the night ended – there's no way she wouldn't have.
He'd tell her about what he had been up to all these days, and she'd be half listening to him and half lost in those eyes of his. She never knew brown eyes could be so special, but she was proven so wrong. He would look at her, and tell her with his eyes and his words how stunning she looks, and she would have felt like the most beautiful girl on this planet. He would make a joke about her obsession with the color red, but they both know he loves it. She would run her hands through his hair just as a joke, but she knows she would have loved it. She probably would have told him to not gel his hair anymore – she likes it all natural. She knows that he's probably busy with his music but still he at least shoul – that's when her heart almost stops.
Blake doesn't play music. Blake doesn't gel his hair. Blake doesn't understand her obsession with red. Blake doesn't have brown eyes. Blake doesn't make her feel like she's the most beautiful creature to ever grace this planet. No, Blake does not do any of that.
Mark does. She does a double take, was it really Mark she had been missing tonight? Not Blake? Not her boyfriend Blake? You're supposed to miss him right?
You call me later, And said I'm sorry I didn't make it. And I said I'm sorry too, And that was the moment I knew.
And when Blake calls her later that night to and apologizes for not coming and Mark does too, only before Blake and has 3 dozen hydrangeas (her favourite flower) delivered to her house with a note saying that he promises he'll make up to his princess for it, she knows.
She knows in the moment, it's not Blake. He was so perfect, he still is, but somewhere along the way, she fell out of love with him.
She may be the girl for him even still, but he's not the guy for her. Not anymore.
Now, her heart belonged to someone else. So she apologizes to him too, and ends the call with a rather hard conversation that she wouldn't ever relive, but it's all feels better with the thought that she has a much more important call to make.
