Why Did You Adopt Me?

I woke up to the car jolting to a stop. The night sky was filled with shining stars, the moon rising up slowly like a bright light bulb. I looked around my surroundings. We were at a gas station. Mercedes must've stopped to replenish fuel. Speaking of Mercedes, she was looking at me with saddened eyes. "What did the doctor say?" Her voice was so low, I could barely hear her.

"Honestly, I don't know. The people in the orphanage never told me, never gave me medicine. They did do a surgery on me, saying that it would make me last longer..." I replied, looking over to my left. Blake was still sound asleep.

"You do know that I'm your sister, right?" She asked, waiting for surprised reaction from me. But instead, I gave her a smile.

"Yeah, I know. Blake told me."

"Oh..." Nobody spoke for a moment. She drove the car near the machines as she suddenly popped a question. "Don't you wanna know why...our parents left you?" I looked at her.

"I suppose."

"I was about 6 when you were born. I was experiencing these...powers. I didn't quite understand it, I was so young back then. My parents gave me up to a study group when my mother gave birth to you. I only saw you for a few moments before I was dragged away from my family."

"That's horrible." I replied. Our parents are assholes! Who would give away their child like that?

"I guess they couldn't take another child so they dropped you off to the orphanage. When I was at that lab, they made me do a lot of experiments. They took blood samples and shit like that. It went on for another ten years when another child was transferred to the lab. He was only 10 but he was smart and witty. We both escaped and now we're on the run."

"Wow. Actually...I have a question."

"Hm?" She asked as she went up to the machines that pumped gas out into the car. Not sure if she could hear me there, I opened the car door and walked towards, shutting the door behind me quietly.

"Why did you guys adopt me?"

"Well, we wanted company. We were lonely so..." She replied, pushing buttons which toggle the machine to start inserting gas in our car. "You know, Blake really loves you. I can tell. He's usually very...sealed up I guess. You really broke him out of his shell."
"See, that's the thing that I'm most afraid of. I'm scared that I'm gonna break him when I leave. I can't afford to see him suffer."

"I get what you mean. You know, Blake may come off as tough but he's a real softie sometimes."

"It just happened so fast... One moment, I am at an orphanage, scrubbing until my fingers are raw and the next, a guy tells me he loves me. I mean, does he even know the first thing about me?" I whispered, still trying to keep Blake asleep for as long as I can.

"Maybe he just thinks he loves me because i'm an outsider, i'm different" Mercedes whips around to face me

"Ok let's get something straight: you are not an outsider anymore. You're with us and second of all, what do you mean 'different'?"

"I can read minds.." I whispered as I got into the passenger side of the car. Her hands were gripping onto the steering wheel until her knuckles turn white. She releases the wheel and turns toward me.

"Is that how you heard Blake? You mind linked was with him?" I nod my head slowly, she draws her lips into a thin line and starts driving again.

"Where are we heading to?" I asked after minutes of silence. Mercedes sighed.

"Honestly, I don't know. I'm just driving around, hoping to find somewhere we can stay in..." She murmured. I nodded and looked out the window next to me when I saw someone running beside the car, its incredible speed matching the car's pace easily. What the hell? The dark figure turned towards me and in a fraction of a second, it disappeared. What just...what just happened? I turn back to the front of the car as we pull into an old motel motel.

Mercedes parks and gets out to pay for the room "Blake.... Blake it's time to wake up" I whisper trying to keep from startling him, he doesn't make a sound I try a little louder "Blake we're at the motel it's time to wake up" I shake his shoulder, still nothing, "BLAKE WAKE UP!!!!!!!" I yell and punch him as hard as I can in his shoulder. He stifles a yawn and sits up rubbing his eyes like a little kid "where are we at?" his voice groggy from his coma like sleep. I chuckle and grab some of the bags as mercedes comes back with the room keys.We pile all our stuff in the far corner of the room and start taking turns for showers.

Once I step into the hot water my muscles begin to relax and my joints stop aching. I search myself for any new wounds but find that the ones from just a few days before had disappeared. I turn my face to the showerhead letting it stream over me I inhale some of the vapor and I fall into a coughing spree. I am on my knees as I cough, the water turns bright red as I continue cough up blood. I hear a knocking on the door but I can't respond I reach to turn off the water and cover myself in a towel as the person walks in to check on me.

Mercedes picks me up with ease and carries me to one of the old beds, she grabs some clothes from my bag and orders blake to turn around for a moment. She helps me dress quickly so I can rest. Once I am fully clothed I tell blake he can turn back around, he rushes to my side to see if I have a fever, I don't but that doesn't stop me from feeling extremely cold and hot at the same time. He grabs several blankets and wraps me while I fall asleep, tired from the blood loss.

The next morning I am recovered, as I walk outside to see fresh snow on the ground and ice cycles hanging from the roof of the motel. I walk to the oak tree that is nearby and sit on the cold ground not bearing to stay in the hot motel room any longer. I pulled out my journal to write but as soon as I do, I see a flash of darkness in front of me. I stand and put the journal back into my pocket and look around for any sign of a person. Footprints are visible in the white powder, but they aren't mine. I start to walk back to the cabin as a cloth is put on my mouth and nose from behind. Everything goes black.
