Sam had been working as a receptionist at the large law firm for only a few months but she really enjoyed the position. She had finished some paperwork that was due to her boss Tamra the next morning and decided anything else left could be finished when she got in the next day. Sam's heals clicked against the concrete as she walked through the large parking structure. It was late and most of the structure had emptied when the other employee's left much earlier. Sam was walking through the structure when she heard two men arguing. She stopped by the large pillar and peered around to see a couple of familiar faces. Thomas one of the partners of the firm was yelling at a man. Sam recognized him to be one of the high profile clients. She couldn't tell what they were arguing about but all too suddenly everything got very hectic. Thomas pulled out a long barreled black hand gun. Sam focused in at the end of the weapon and realised it was extended so much because there was a silencer on the end of the barrel. She gasped quietly as Thomas yelled at the man, "If you don't want your secrets aired to the media then you'll pay!" He spat the words venomously. "Go fuck yourself Tom!" The client bellowed back. Tom's face was red with fury. He straighted his arm and squeezed the trigger....
Sam gasped as she shot up from her makeshift bed on the floor. Her forehead was glistening in the moonlight with beads of sweat and her cheeks were stained with tears. She got up and walked to the bathroom and splashed cool water on her face. Her mind felt like it was racing a mile a minute and she didn't want to go back to sleep and return to the awful dream. The clock read four in the morning. "Why, why couldn't I have just stayed and finished a little more work." Sam felt sick as she cursed her selfish thoughts. Here she was after running away wishing she could have not been there when a man was possibly, probably dead. Shaking her thoughts away she wandered out to the living room and sat down on the comfy suede couch. Clicking on the television her eyes focused on the screen although her mind was miles away. After some time she drifted off to a thankfully dreamless sleep.
The next morning she lounged around happy that today she didn't have to work. After such a broken night of sleep she would have dreaded having to wake early and get ready. Lauren was already gone, she had a full time job at the local salon as a hairdresser. Having the apartment to herself Sam went to the kitchen and started a pot of coffee before putting a couple of slices of bread in the toaster. Not having a long to do list for the day Sam decided after breakfast and coffee she would go to the furniture store down the street and purchase a new mattress and frame. No more sleeping on the floor. She thought happily.
"Just over there would be perfect, thank you Mr. Owens." Sam said to the older looking man as she pointed to the center of the room. She had picked out a full sized mattress and frame. She fell in love with a headboard that Mr. Owens had made himself out of an old fashoined door.
Mr. Owens set the mattress up against the wall and went back down to his truck for the pieces of the frame. When he returned he placed the long pieces of metal down and went back for the headboard. "Would you like me to set this up for you Ma'am?" He offered.
"Oh I'm sure you need to be getting back to the store. I think I could maybe manage, I'm sure Lauren will lend a hand when she gets home." Sam said trying to sound confident.
"Oh darlin' you'd be sleeping on this floor again if I left you to do this on your own." Mr. Owens chuckled deeply. "Plus, Mrs. Owens and my son Marcus are at the store. They're capable of closing up. It's no problem."
"Ok," She smiled at the kind man. "Can I get you a glass of ice water, maybe some tea?" Sam offered thankfully.
"Nah, I'm just fine my dear. You go and relax I'll have this ready in no time." Mr. Owens waved her away already assembling the pieces of the frame.
Sam was sprawled out comfortably on her wonderful new bed when there was a knock at her bedroom door. "Come in!" She yelled in a sing song voice to who she thought was Lauren arriving home from work coming to say hello. To her surprise Henry came striding in towards her.
"Lauren let me in, she said she ran into Mr. Owens on her way in. I love it." He said motioning a hand towards the bed with a sly smile.
"Thanks, I was sleeping on a pile of blankets before so it's a nice upgrade." She said happily of her new squishy bed.
"Well, I ordered some take out and was on my way out to get it when I realised I had ordered way too much." He said acting as if he were contemplating a solution. "Maybe you would wanna share it with me?" He questioned as if the idea had just dawned on him.
"Nah, I'm not hungry." Sam replied in a bored tone. Henry's smile fell, his mouth opening and closing not sure what to say. "Just kiddin'! I would love to, wanna picnic in here?" She sent him a wink.
Henry laughed loudly. "Phew." He said over dramatically. "Sounds perfect Sammy." Her name slid so nicely off his lips. He walked over to the bed and bent down resting his hands on the mattress, "I'll be back soon." And with a kiss to her forehead he turned toward the door.
"See you soon." She called to him causing him to turn to her and nod his head in reply. Now she just had to shake off her nerves and clear her head of the thoughts she had about Henry being in her room.....
