Chapter Three

The ceremony passes without a hitch. Me and Heracles are in matching sparkly farmer outfits. We were given specific instructions on how to act too. I was supposed to be friendly and social, which wasn't very easy. I'm kind of shy. Heracles was supposed to act like a "cool dude" as his stylist put it. He aced it.

We also had interviews. I hardly remember my questions or who was asking me them. I was spaced out the whole time. I don't think I was too popular.

And finally, there was trainings and then ratings. I got a 5. I have no hope of winning or even getting sponsors at this point. I'll be an early death. The best competition seems to be either Ludwig or Tino, who got a 10 and a 9 respectively. Tino is surprisingly skilled despite his weak appearance. But I saw Ludwig giving him odd glares...weird.

I noticed some friendships, or more like alliances, emerging in training. Antonio and Lovino are from the same district and are apparently best friends. Feliciano is also hitting it off with Ludwig and Kiku. Berwald, Mathias, Emil, Lukas, and Tino have been hanging around each other a lot and exchanging tips. As for myself, I have been getting along with Lilli pretty well. She got a low rating too, a 4.

She's very sweet but also very scared. I fear she'll even die before me. I'm sorry that there's no way I'll be able to prevent that.

The day I've been dreading arrives sooner then expected. Heracles can't manage to calm me down. I want to crawl into a hole and never get out. I just hope my death will be painless, fast, and easy.

"Welcome ladies and gentleman to the 110th annual HUNGER GAMES!" an announcer shouts from somewhere. I'm watching on a nearby television. My arm still stings from the earlier injection of a tracker I got. I shove my hand in my pocket and rub my glasses that are inside. We were allowed to keep one token from home and I chose them for mine. They're the only truly familiar thing here now that Heracles is acting funny.

The other tributes are adjusting their uniforms and fixing their hair and stuff like that. This is the last moment of peace any of us will ever have besides the victor. I wonder who that will be? I look at everyone one district at a time.

District 1 has a 7 and an 8. Roderich and Vash have been trained for this longer than anyone else. They would be dangerous to get on the bad side of. But they don't seem to be too ruthless. They're more sympathetic than some other tributes. I even saw Vash giving Lilli some tips once during training.

District 2 is a bit more worrying. Alfred isn't too much of a concern. He's really emotional and only a 5. I don't think he wants to kill people and will probably die due to his own kindness. Ludwig, however, is scary. He's a 10 and he definitely deserves it. He doesn't seem hesitant at all to harm others and has only shown any form of friendliness to Feliciano and Kiku.

I'm not too worried about District 3. Eduard is the weakest of all of us, a 2. He's terrified and barely participated in training. I sort of feel bad for him in a way. Kiku is a 6 but he's kind. He seems more like somebody who would hide and wait instead of enacting violence right away. But still, he's working for Ludwig.

District 4's tributes are weak, simply put. Lovino is a 4 and Antonio is a 7. Although Antonio might turn out to be problematic based on that score, he's been looking out for Lovino and a few other tributes. He clearly values friendship heavily and won't have the heart to harm people unless necessary. Lovino, on the other hand, can barely hold a weapon. He'll probably die from tripping over something.

District 5 has mysterious tributes. I don't know a whole lot about them. I do know that Arthur got an 8 and Lukas got a 7. But I haven't got a clue what their skills are. I might need to spy on them a little later.

District 6 is also weak for the most part. Francis is heavily distracted and a ditz, so he ended up with a 3. But Tino is unusual. He appears weak and scared, but I can tell he's definitely playing it up. He's actually quite strong. After all, he got a 9. He's been getting along well with many tributes, so as a result they'll be reluctant to kill him. Clever guy.

District 7 has Berwald, a 7, and Mathias, a 5. Berwald is mysterious and quiet. He's really strong, but he didn't do much with weapons. He instead focused on the stations for safety and natural resources and stuff like that. Mathias is emotional like Alfred. He's also quite scared so I don't think he'll be doing much fighting.

I'm unsure about District 8. While Ivan and Yao are friendly, they're not weak either. Ivan got a 9 and Yao got an 8. Ivan's on the slow side but he has a great deal of physical strength to balance it out. Yao is the opposite; sort of weak but very speedy and cunning. He can outrun just about everybody and his punches and kicks are apparently pretty powerful.

District 9 has an 8 and a 5. Elizaveta is a hard hitter and not afraid of beating people up. She's independent and is fine with solitude. Sadiq puts on a confident act, but is cowardly. He might injure people, but I can't picture him going through with killing them.

And then there's me and Heracles. I'm not brave at all. I tried to learn a little bit about everything in training. I just hope that helps out. Heracles got a six. He's usually peaceful, but ever since the Reaping he's been acting different. He seems to be accepting the fact that he's going to have to kill. In a way he even seems sort of...bloodthirsty. I hope he doesn't turn on me.

District 11 is weak. They've got the two youngest tributes. Emil is 13 and Lilli is 12. Neither of them are particularly strong; they're both 4s. Like Sadiq, Emil puts on a confident facade. He tends to distance himself from people and doesn't say too much. I've never seen him smile. Lilli is trying her best to be brave but she's not doing well. She's too scared and knows she'll likely lose.

And finally, District 12. Feliciano is a weak crybaby who got a 3. But he seems to be allies with Ludwig and Kiku, which is a cause of concern. They're probably going to protect him while he builds up strength. Toris is also a 3, but he's depressed and has said he's already feeling ill. He claims its just nervousness, but I doubt it. He's been moping so much that he barely participated in training. I think he'll die early.

Thinking about my fellow tributes has allowed me to tune out the long pointless speech the announcer was giving. They do the same one pretty much every year. I take a deep breath. The platform we're on starts lowering. Lilli nearly falls off, but I catch her. The crowd disappears as we sink lower and lower. All that surrounds us is darkness. I hear frightened whispers from the other tributes. Everyone is a little nervous now that our time has come.

After a few endless minutes, someone speaks up. "I'm going to be the victor here, got it? Nobody is going to get in my way." It's Ludwig.

"Yep! You're the best!" Feliciano agrees from next to him, "I mean, I already know we have no chance, so you're going to win for me and Kiku!" Kiku makes a "mmhmm" sort of noise, but says nothing.

"Nothing's decided yet. Wait a while before saying stuff like that," Tino says cockily and rolls his eyes. Berwald nods.

"Sissy. At least I'm not trying to trick everyone," Ludwig retorts.

"It's not called tricking. It's called strategies. Of course you wouldn't know what that is, because you don't have any." I hear Mathias stifle his laughter.

Ludwig clenches his fists but shuts up. The rest of the trip is silent.

It feels like forever, but we start slowing down. Then the platform shakes and stops completely. A door opens in front of us to reveal bright light. A voice comes on the loudspeaker.

"And now...let the 110th Hunger Games begin!"

We all pour into the arena.

This is where I will die, along with everyone with me. Except one lucky victor. Who will it be?
