Chapter Nine (Ludwig's POV)

I stomp off in search for somebody to take my anger out on. Everyone is too scared to confront me, so I don't bother being cautious. I'm already guaranteed to win. But there is one thing that's slightly concerning me.

Feliciano is dead and I don't know where Kiku is. I bet he'll die soon too. Neither of them are good on their own. I guess I'm sort of upset about Feliciano going boom. I didn't know him that well, but he was so loyal and eager to work for me. He was probably the person I was least willing to kill. Looks like that sissy boy, Matthew I think, did my job for me. Maybe Feliciano would still be here if I hadn't let my temper get the best of me on the first day. Maybe he and Kiku would still be helping me. Maybe-wait. I can't be thinking about others! I don't need anybody. They'll just drag me down. Caring about people is only a sign of weakness. I'm much better on my own like this.

Yeah, that's right.

I squeeze my stick tighter. I wish I hadn't lost my weapon. Kiku probably has it. Yesterday Lukas, Lilli, Francis, and I all raided his camp. I must have left it behind there. But it's too late to go back for it. I'm sure it's long gone. Now that I think about it, Lukas is dead too. I was one of the last people he ever interacted with and ever will interact with. That's an unusual thought.

Crack!

I turn around and scowl. "Who's there?" I shout at the bushes. No response. I stand and wait. And wait. The source of the noise will have to show themselves eventually. I raise my stick in a position that I hope looks threatening and creep toward the bushes. I lower it and with a blonde flash somebody jumps to the bush next to the first one. "Show yourself if you want to live!"

A pause. Then Lilli pops out of the bush. "Hey Ludwig," she says and waves. She's probably trying to get my mercy. But that's not happening! I worked with her for my benefit and my benefit only.

"Who else is with you?" I demand.

"Nobody," she answers immediately. But then I hear a rustle. She obviously did too because she smiles nervously. "That's probably just a squirrel."

"Show me your weapon."

She holds up a worn-out pistol. A real gun! Much better than a stupid branch! I try to snatch it out of her hands but she holds on tight. Then someone else comes out of another bush. I don't remember his name. Lilli glares at him. "Vash! You were supposed to hide!" she hisses at him. Oh right, he's one of the District 1 tributes.

"You came out. I told you to pretend you didn't have that pistol, but it looks like you didn't listen either," he says nonchalantly. He looks up at me. "Hello Ludwig."

"You're both going to die if she doesn't give me that," I warn. Vash points at something in the distance.

"There's someone behind you," he tells me. I roll my eyes.

"I'm not going to fall for that ridiculous trick."

"I'm not a liar. There really is."

"Hi Alfred!" Lilli greets happily.

"Woah, I'm just passing through. I'm not gonna get in the way of your brutal murdering session," Alfred says. I gaze at him with the corner of my eye. He seems a bit worse for wear. But his positive attitude hasn't completely faded yet. We're only two days in; I'm sure it won't take much longer.

Ignoring the fact that I'm going to kill him in a moment, I mean.

"It's not brutal. It's efficient," I say and tug on the gun. Why does she have such a strong grip? Jeez, isn't she, like, twelve? I doubt she's had much training for fights like I have.

"Bye dudes! Good luck!" Alfred exclaims and tries to run. But that's when Lilli's grasp on the gun weakens and I manage to pull it from her. I point it at Alfred right between his eyes. Lilli and Vash don't move a muscle.

"Not so hasty. It's either you or them," I say. He gulps.

"Can't we talk this out...?" he pleads.

"If you knew anything about me, you'd know that I'm not one for talking. Or sparing people," I respond coldly. I want to get this over with.

"I do know you. Don't you remember?" he asks.

"Remember what?"

"Fourth grade."

"What about it?" I ask. I'm getting impatient.

"I let you copy my math homework. Every day. You never did it yourself and I was too scared to refuse," he says. He chuckles. "You were sort of a bully. Still are, except now you've killed."

"Some stupid assignments from years ago won't buy you your life," I mutter.

"Or will they?" he counters. He narrows his eyes and smirks.

"What are you going on about? I don't have the time for your childish games," I ask.

"Run!" he shouts. I instinctively turn around. Lilli is already dashing away. I move my gun away from Alfred's face and pull the trigger. She dodges and trips over a rock but hastily gets up. She disappears from sight a moment later. Vash is still frozen in place, eyes wide. I'm about to try to shoot him too when I fall over.

Or more like, I'm pushed.

The gun falls out of my hand and is quickly scooped up by someone. I stand up and Alfred points it at me. "I'm not as dumb as I look. I know how to use one of these too," he growls. "After all, I am from District 2."

He pulls the trigger. I dodge.

The bullet misses me, but it nearly hits Vash. That brings him back to his senses and he makes a mad sprint away from us. He trips over the same rock and limps away.

Now it's just me and Alfred.

"I'm impressed. Bad aim, though," I say and stand right in front of him. I cross my arms. "You're getting a real kick out of this, aren't you?"

He shrugs. "You're lucky that I'm nice," he replies. He grins and calmly walks in the other direction, still carrying the pistol.

I don't even have my stupid stick anymore. What a bad situation.

(Unrelated, but I just found out that Switzerland's human name is Basch, not Vash. Sorry about that! :/ The list I got all the characters' names from must have been a little off. It's too late to go back and fix it though. He's simply appeared too many times for me to do that. I've also decided to start switching between POV's to make things a bit more interesting. There's not much exciting stuff happening today or tonight, but starting at Day 3 or so, lots of deaths begin to occur. Day 4 is particularly great. Fun, fun, fun! We're currently on Day 2 by the way. See you in the next chapter! *Evil laughter*)
