Chapter Two: Savior
Kyi (k-I)
I looked at the swirl of the sky and ocean blue colors on the vase. Subconsciously, I picked it up and threw it at the coral wall. Anger built up quickly inside me, and I lost my head.
How could I be so stupid?! Dad will be furious when he finds out what I've done. I can't believe I got so jealous over that pretty boy. She was just so beautiful!
I watched the rescue team, that consisted of fish, as they went to retrieve her. Hopefully they'll get her back to shore safely. If anything goes wrong, they were ordered to send her directly to me. I stared at the watch bubble. So far the team was making great progress. They had the girl in their possession. She was already unconscious, so we didn't have to improvise.
I switched the view of the bubble to the ocean's bank. There, the pretty boy sat covered with a towel, waiting for the girl's safe return. He was found that morning on the beach where he had washed ashore. Humans found him incoherent. Now all the humans stood all around him scanning the horizon. There were cars with flashing lights everywhere and the place wasn't as full of people as it usually was. Although there did seem to be a rather strange amount of divers there. No doubt they were searching for the girl.
I stood over the only view of the outside world that I've ever had. My anger had ceased and now my hopes were filled with the safe return of the girl. An epidemic like this had only happened once before.
After my human mother passed away during my third birthday, Dad became very lonely. I remembered how he'd sit in this room and just watch the bubble, sighing hopelessly. When I was ten, there came a day that my dad began to love again. He'd sit here and watch the human woman with loving eyes. Those were the times that I hadn't seen him so happy since mom was alive. One night a group of men came and tried to use her for their own pleasures. They held her against the sandy beach. It was my duty to watch the bubble that night. My eyes were wide with horror as I ran to my father. He barged in the room with a terrifying rage. His eyes were glaring menacingly at the bubble. I had already sent out the rescue fish to retrieve her, if she ever fell into the ocean. My eyes were glued to the scene that was before me.
Suddenly the waves became huge. They crashed into the shore and made sand fly everywhere. One of the biggest rained down upon the men and the woman, engulfing them all. I watched the humans as they helplessly flaunted around; it was no use against the mighty sea. The wave crashed them into a lifeguard station. Dad's anger had gotten the best of him. The woman herself had flew in between the wooden railing. By the time the rescue team arrived, it was too late. Every single person who was caught in that wave died.
Dad sat back in shock. Tears were welling in his eyes. That night he promised never to love a human again and ordered me to do the same. Dad hasn't set foot in this room since that night.
I didn't mean to fall in love with the girl. It just happened. The image of her standing towards the ocean looking at the pretty boy was haunting my mind. How her black, beautiful hair billowed in the wind, and her deep emerald eyes shone in the moonlight. I sighed lovingly as I thought of her. In my mind, I pictured her thanking me for being her savior and her rewarding me with a romantic kiss. It was a hopeless love anyway, dad would wring my neck if he ever found...
The Castle began to rumble....
“Kyi!” boomed arumbling voice. I jumped a few paces back, totally awakened from my daydream. “KYI! COME TO ME NOW!”
I slowly walked into the palace room. My head was down as I walked to the throne and I did not look at my father. He sat there with his fingers taping on the golden arm chair. His sea blue eyes were pierced at me with anger.
“Kyi, what have you done son?”
I gulped loudly, “I'm sorry I disobeyed your orders father. It wasn't intentional for me to fall in love with the human girl.”
Father's eyes got red with anger. “You did what?! I was referring to you missing your engagement party. Azul was furious, and her band of mermaids will be here any minute to put you in misery.” My eyes went wide with horror as he stormed into the watch room.
How could I forget about my engagement to Azul, the mermaid princess? Its all dad ever talks about. He's always saying how much peace will come from our marriage, but I don't love her. I only did what dad told me to do.
“Kyi!! Where is she?” Dad yelled at me. I shook my head of my thoughts and ran to where he was.
“She should be on shore now father.” I switched the bubble to beach view. All the divers had gotten out of the water, and everyone looked sullen. My heart dropped and began to hurt. She must have died. The rescue team must not have gotten to her in time. I had mistaken her death simply as unconsciousness.
My body sunk to the floor and I began to cry. It was my fault that something so beautiful died.
Dad tried to put his hand on my shoulder to comfort me, but I shrugged it off and went straight to my room. I demanded that no one bother me and locked my door. Then I slumped on my bed and sulked.
It was my fault that beautiful girl was dead. Like father, I couldn't save the human girl I fell in love with. Some savior I am.
