As I make my final marks on the page, I start to notice the sun has already risen into the sky. Looking down at the page it gives me a sense of peace, reminding me of the old life I used to have back home. I left that life last summer when my father was promoted and we moved to Tokyo for his career. And today I start my first day of Junior High. As my mind starts to drift away from me, I can hear a faint echo of my mom's voice, which is gradually starting to roar louder until I hear her screaming.
"Ty! Hurry up, you're about to be late!" she yelled. I look down and I see I'm still in my pajamas, so you can only imagine how flustered I was. I was running around aimlessly looking for clothes that would at least fit. But in all the chaos of my bedroom , I open the closet to find a uniform that my mom had laid out for me. Personally I'm not one for uniforms, but hey, clothes are clothes and I can't afford to be anymore late than I already am.
I rush by a mirror but then I notice something, forcing me to take a double take. I look back and notice that my hair is a complete trainwreck. Mom always taught us to take pride in our appearance so I quickly brush it down and slick it back. First impressions are everything, and being known back home as "Tardy Ty", I'd rather start a new reputation for myself.
"Done". I grab my bag and slide down the railing, landing abruptly on my face. Staring up I see my older sister and younger brother staring right back down. My sister with an annoyed look on her face, "Even half way around the world Ty, you're still a late little clutz." she said, arrogance in her voice. "You have the nerve to call me a clutz Tahlia? I'm not the one who dropped great-grandma's priceless vase last Christmas?" I sneer at her. "That was an accident because I was trying to catch your baseball from crashing the vase in the first place". she growled at me. "Ladies ladies, please. Can't we continue this fight after we get on the bus?" Tristan says. We both look at each other and then back at him and say in unison for him to but out. But knowing that he was right as always, we run out the door to the bus pushing and shoving trying to squeeze into the door. Until finally she pushes me to the side and down to the ground blowing a raspberry my way. Tristan helps me up, and all three of us get on the bus to go to school.
As I step on the bus I feel all too familiar with this scene. The loudest in the back, quietest in front, and all the rest of us scrunched somewhere in the middle. "Ah do I ever love the smell of bus fumes and overpowering cologne in the morning." I sarcastically yawn. Well, at least that's one thing that reminds me of home. I walk down the aisle to see an open seat, as I prepare to sit down a much larger built teen comes my way and sits right down. From prior experience I decide it's just not worth it, so I go back to the front of the bus and decide to sit next to a random young boy around my age.
"Is this seat taken?" I ask. "Oh no it's not, please sit down. I can find another seat." he says waving his arms around nervously. "Don't worry about it man, I just wanna sit next to the window." I say. "Oh..o..okay." He stands up and allows me to sit down next to him. I place my bag in between my legs on the ground as I hear the bus roar away from the curb. A new country, new town, but still the same feel. I start to stare off into the distance trying to get a feel for my way around town. Though within around 10 minutes on the bus, my eyes are starting to feel heavy. All those hours up late last night are finally starting to catch up to me. But before I can close my eyes, there is something that catches my eye. Right as we come to a screeching halt I notice a woman right across the street. A tall slender woman with long black silk hair. She looks all too familiar, like someone I saw back home. I try to turn away but I can't. It's like her eyes are slowly drawing me closer to her. I don't get much more than a glimpse before we pull off, I can almost swear her eyes glew red. But I decide to shake it off, as I look back ahead of me. We come to a halt in front of the school, the Dejima Academy for Academic Preparation. "Dejima Academy?" I ask him. "Yes, Dejima Prep is one of the most prestigious schools in the country. Though most students simply refer to it as 'the Academy' ". "The Academy huh, sounds like a boarding school. Looks nice enough on the outside though. Let's hope this is any consolation for the inside."
