At lunch Anne sits with her best friends Marie, Kara, and Kathryn, who prefers to be called Kath. Lunch was probably the only time Anne could actually relax; take a load off. She could hang out with her friends and be happy and not worry about school and all the shit that comes with it.
Anne finds herself looking for Grace as she sits with her friends, unpacking her lunch box and setting her food out neatly in front of her. She doesn't see her anywhere. A lot of people would make the comment "She's probably getting high in the bathroom or giving blowjobs in the janitor's closet," but Anne thinks higher of Grace and decides to just mind her own business.
Anne shakes her head and inserts herself into the conversation between her table mates.
"I don't know why you guys are complaining about the rain," she says, rolling her eyes, "rain is amazing. i love the smell and the feel of it on my skin and basically everything about it."
Anne's friends all stare at her for a moment before Kathryn giggles a bit, interjecting, "Wow, way to make this conversation ten times deeper."
Kath's comment causes everyone at the table to laugh for a few seconds and go back to eating their food.
"Sorry guys, I just have a higher intelligence than all of you. I wouldn't expect you to understand," Anne states with a smirk and a raise of her eyebrows. The sarcasm in Anne's voice is very noticeable. Anne knows that she is probably the least smart person sitting at the table.
"Ha ha, very funny," Marie says with a shake of her head. Anne has known Marie since kindergarten and they have been best friends ever since.
It's sort of amazing how good of friends the two are because of their intense differences. Anne is outspoken and outgoing but Marie is shy and timid. But Marie had told Anne a month ago that she was struggling with depression and Anne honestly did not believe her. She had thought, Marie has a great life, she's always happy.
But, then she was ignorant to what depression actually was. Depression is chemical. The quality of your life does not control it.
Anne had dealt with depression before, though. Her long time friend Alexis was deeply depressed and suicidal. She had a rough life and that's why Anne thought you had to have a miserable life to be depressed. Her sister, Stephanie was depressed also. She tried to kill herself a couple years ago. Anne thought she did that because she was going through a rough patch with her ex-girlfriend Kelsey, but it was not only that. Stephanie takes medication for her depression and also for anxiety. She also smokes a lot of weed.
Anne loves her sisters and her whole family. She's known Stephanie's sexual orientation since she was ten and overheard Stephanie come out to their parents. She learned that her other sister, Avenelle, was gay when she was 12 years old. She also heard her come out to their parents.
Their mother tried to hide it from Anne and her younger brother, Andrew, but Anne already knew and always talked to her sisters about it and about their relationships. Andrew didn't know for a while until their mother finally decided to explain it to him. He had a vague idea that something was different, though.
Anne and her friends eat the rest of their lunch in silence until they're finished and make light conversation about class.
It doesn't take long before they are dismissed and sent back to class.
