"June! June, get up!" Gabriel was calling to me. "What?" I muttered, groggily. "It's Mrs. Julia! Come on!" he said, throwing a blue dress to me. I was suddenly alert and jumped up to get dressed and then got Dylan dressed. Delilah went with us to the hospital. I was still half asleep but just leaned against Gabriel as he drove. At the hospital we basically ran to Mrs. Julia's room.
I walked in to see Mrs. Julia with tubes and machines strapped all over her. The EKG was getting slower. "I shouldn't of told you not to waste your time on Gabriel," she said, "I love you, June. You think of me always and don't ever let my memories die." I couldn't hold back any tears. My face crumpled and I cried into Gabriel's shoulder. "I love you, too," I said, still crying. She held out a necklace to me. It had a sapphire gem in it with white diamonds around the circle on a gold chain. "You wear this," she told me as she placed it in my hand and clasped her hand around mine. 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star' sounded throughout the halls. "That means a baby's just been born," she told us, "It's nice to drift out of this world when a new, sweet life drifts in." Mrs. Mary took Dylan out of the room and Mrs. Julia let go of my hand. She smiled at me and then layed back her head like she was going to sleep. Mrs. Julia died right then and there in front of Gabriel and I. "NO!!" I cried as Gabriel grabbed my waist from behind.
"June!!" Gabriel yelled with tears filling his eyes, "There's nothing you can do!" I turned and beat onto his chest. "She was my best friend!" I sobbed into his chest. Mrs. Mary had handed Dylan to Delilah and came into the room. "June, you listen to me," she said, crying, "There's nothing you can do now. She lived a good, long life and now she's gone to be with the Lord." I went into a steady cry and let the doctors escort us out. "What happened?" I asked, "How did she go down so fast?" Mrs. Mary was trying to wipe the makeup stains and tears of my face. "She was just ready to go. It was sudden. She didn't suffer for very long," Delilah told me. Dylan was crying because I was. "Come here, sweet baby," I said, pulling her into my lap and holding her.
"I'm so sorry," Gabriel told me as we left the hospital. I only nodded. "We'll call the funeral home and you can go by the florist," Mrs. Mary told me. As soon as we got home I called the florist to go pick up red roses and white hydrangeas, Mrs. Julia's favorite. Gabriel made me go soak in a bath while he sat on the side and talked to me. I got out of the bath and immediately fell asleep.
