Chapter 2 – ‘Fille Vilaine’
Suddenly, rain started pouring on all the students. Lightning streaks were everywhere, nearly missing kids and hitting nearby trees. The strong wind was blowing so hard, I could barley walk in the different direction of the wind current. The ground trembled below me, and many students had already fallen to the ground, some crying with blood pouring from their wounds.
“What caused this sudden storm?” I thought to myself. I could hardly make out what Mr. Eras was shouting.
“All students - go – your dorms – immediately! New – report – the auditorium!” All of the students were sprinting towards the school in a jumbled fashion. There was one kid who was just standing there, not knowing what to do, confused by the dramatic situation. Me. My wavy brown hair flowed behind me. My gold eyes were widened in surprise. My olive skin seemed to be glowing a whole different color, and lighting flashed all around me lighting and shadowing my angled face.
“Shay, what the hell are you doing!?” I heard someone screech to my left. It was J.J. “Shay come on!” I felt a sharp grasp tighten around my arm, and next thing I knew I was being dragged across the field inside. J.J. and I finally reached the building, and we stumbled into the main hall, soaking wet.
“What. The. Hell.” J.J. gasped.
“I’m sorry.” I mumbled. “I guess I was in a daze or something…”
“Well I’m glad your safe. We have never had a storm that bad and that sudden. Well, anything can happen here!” He chuckled. “Don’t forget to go to the main hall,” He added. “Oh! And Shay, welcome to the School of the Powerful.” With that, he briskly walked away to his dorm.
I made my way to the auditorium, my soggy clothing sloshing at every step. I could barley cover my disappointed face. The sudden storm had interrupted the ceremony in which I could finally find out my power. I thought I felt something in my hands, a ball of power, and I do remember aiming it at a tree. But nothing happened. “What if I don’t have a power?” I frantically thought to myself. “And why did the storm start as soon as I released my sphere of power?” Whatever. I finally started focusing on trudging to the auditorium, and before I knew it I reached gorgeous glass door that opened at any students touch.
“Kate Samuels!” Mr. Eras would shout.
“Here.” An unknown student would reply in a bored tone.
“Shay Live!” I heard my name being called. I was the last one on the list, and the attendance sheet was in alphabetical order. “Joe Walford was called before me.” I thought. I don’t care. Doesn’t matter.
“Here.” I replied like every other student.
“Good everyone is here.” Mr. Eras started. “I’m sorry for the inconvenience of the storm interrupting our procession. To all the kids who have not found out your powers, we will finish this tomorrow. I am sorry to say none of the other students will be attending that ceremony because they will have classes. But don’t worry, I bet you will not have too much trouble telling people about your power at your lunch tables!” He chuckled. “Each and every one of you will be staying in a dorm. You will have either 1 or 2 roommates, and for some of you, those roommates will not be in the same grade as you. There are 4 buildings for the rooms, 2 women commons, and 2 men commons. It is strictly forbidden to enter the common of the opposite gender. Exceptions only when being together for a group project and having to work in one of your dorms. Do you understand?”
A chorus of mumbled yes’s, mixed in with a few sighs erupted from the students.
“Your dorm assignments will be posted on the attention board to my left. The 2 women buildings are A and B. A is the one closest to the entrance. Building B is to the left of A. The two boy dorms are right next to it, the C building the left of B, and the D building to the left of C. It is not complicated. You will also receive a floor, 1, 2, 3, or 4. Each floor has 50 dorms rooms. As an example your dorm room will be C – 1 – 37. Meaning building C, floor 1, and room 37. You may all slowly walk over in an organized fashion to the attention board.”
