I woke up slowly, my head rolling off to the other side before I slowly opened my eyes. My head pounded. I groaned miserably and tried to press my hand to my head, only to discover that I was tied down to the bed beneath me.
Memory came washing back to me, along with all the panic. I fainly remembered being half awake as something was injected into my arm.
I remembered waking up several times in agony, sometimes burning up, other times freezing half-to-death. I could fuzzily remember blurry faces looking down at me.
"Jayden?" I heard a familiar voice ask, worry laced the voice.
"Jack? What happened to me?" I asked weakly.
"How much do you remember?" He mumbled uncomfortably.
"I was bitten by a zombie... Everything else is fuzzy, but I think I was injected with something..." I croaked. My throat felt dry and cracked, as did my mouth. My muscles screamed at me to move, but there was no way for me to move since my arms, legs, and chest were strapped down to the bed.
"Uh... Yeah... That really did happen..." Jack said reluctantly. "I'll be right back." He said before disapearing right before I could speak again. I struggled against the bonds. Jack disappearing panicked me even more.
I stopped struggling when I heard footsteps coming closer to me. I lifted my head to see who it was. To my surprise Mr. C., Jack, and Ella.
"Jaydinn." Mr. Christiansen smiled. "How're you feeling?" He asked me and I ignored thw question.
"Why am I strapped down to this bed? How am I not a zombie? What was I injected with? Can I please have some water?" I shouted, my voice cracking.
Ella's brown eyes glared at me. I wasn't sure what I'd done to her this time. Ella looked even more angry than usual as I was released from my bonds.
"I wouldn't try and get up yet-" Mr. C. was cut off as I attempted to get to my feet, only to have my knees buckle underneath me. Jack and Mr. C. had to help me get to my feet and sit down on the bed.
"Don't try getting up for a while. The same thing will happen again." Ella snapped. I sighed inwardly. Man, she really hated me. She'd shown no sign of concern when I'd fallen. Or when I'd been bitten by a zombie. Or any time before that.
"Can someone please answer my questions?" I muttered, running a hand through my hair. Mr. C. gave me a halfhearted smile.
"Okay, well... It's complicated..." He mumbled reluctantly. I stared at him, rather irritated.
"Well, simplify it for me, because I need to know." I snapped. Mr. C. didn't reply. Ella rolled her eyes in annoyance.
"You're not a zombie because we injected you with an experimental cure." She snapped. "Though I said we shouldn't waste it on you but Chris insisted." Mr. C. glared at her and she shrugged it off. "As for why you were strapped to the bed, that's because you could have turned into a zom. You were screaming in agony. I personally thought you were going to turn inti a zombie. I was more than prepared to shoot you in the head if that happened." She grinned at me. Jack stared at her, his mouth slightly agape in horror.
"Ella!" Chris snapped. "Get-" I cut him off.
"Why do hate me so much? What did I do to make you hate me?" I yelled at Ella.
"What did you do? You started the freaking zombie apocalypse! Because of you everyone I knew is dead! I lived on my own for months! I had to survive against zom's for months alone! All of this is your fault!" She screamed and stormed out of the room. We all stared after her in horror.
"Well, now we no for sure why she hates you..." Jack mumbled uncomfortably. I gave him a weak smile.
"Yeah..." I whispered in agreement. We all stayed in a shocked silence for a moment after that until Chris coughed awkwardly.
"Well... What she said about the experimental cure was the truth. We weren't sure if you were going to turn into a zombie, so we had to strap you down to the bed to be safe." Chris muttered.
"What about the water?" I asked and John handed me a water bottle. I practically inhaled the water inside it. I thought about it all. An experimental cure. I wasn't a zom. It had worked. "Does this mean you guys found a cure?" I practically shouted. Chris looked at his feet.
"Not exactly..." He mumbled. I stared at him blankly.
"Not exactly?" I asked him with one eyebrow raised.
"Well, while you were out cold a couple others were bitten. We injected them with the same stuff, but none of them lived. I don't actually know how you survived it." I stared at him blankly.
"Who else got bitten?" I asked in horror.
"Ashe, Nate, and Sephira." Jack said sadly. I sighed.
"We should probably leave this area. It's gotten too active." I reluctantly to Chris. He nodded.
"I was waiting for you to either wake up or turn into a zom. I'm glad it was the first one." He said quietly with a small, sincere smile. I nodded silently. "We'll leave tomorrow. You should be okay by then." I just nodded again. Jack looked at me sadly.
Chris left Jack and I in the room and I looked at Jack.
"Man, that was disappointing." I sighed and Jack agreed. "I'd thought that my mistake would finally be corrected. I guess not."
"Well, you lived, so the cure can't be far off, right?" Jack asked, trying to be positive for me. I gave him a fake grin.
"Yeah." I agreed with fake happiness in my voice. I'm hungry." I said quickly, changing the subject and attempting to get to my feet. I stood shakily for a moment before taking a step forward. My limbs didn't react very fast, but I kept going anyway. I stumbled clumsily into the kitchen for food. I got tired by the time I sat down. Jack trailed after me the entire time.
"How long was I out, anyway?" I asked him, a bit worried now.
"Almost a week." He replied right as I tried to swallow a bite of apple and I choked on it in shock.
"What?" I asked him once I'd finished gagging and choking.
"Almost a week." He repeated, a bit more relucantly this time. I groaned inwardly. I'd been unconscious for almost a week. No wonder I felt so weak and exhausted.
