The rest of that day I just felt crappy. My limbs slowly started listening to me better as I moved around more, although I felt exhausted and weak and sore. Nothing eventful happened.
No one left the base for fear of the zombies attacking again. Everyone was anxious to be leaving. Everyone seemed wary of me, too, like I'd turned into a zombie. At one point I had to look in a mirror to assure myself that nothing was wrong with me.
Everyone spent the day gathering everything that we'd stashed so we could leave early in the morning when the zombies are most active. I couldn't help much.
The next day it was obvious that everyone was relieved to be packing several cars and moving out. We'd all gotten used leaving hideouts behind. Heck, we'd been through half the country since this all first started.
In less that an hour we had all of out stuff packed into five cars that we'd hijacked in the past. Everyone piled into different cars, the older people driving.
Jack and I hopped into the back of the car that Chris was driving. Annoyingly Ella decided to take the passanger seat.
"Hey, Chris?" I asked him, getting his attention. He glanced at me in the mirror as the car lead the way for others.
"Yeah? What's up?" he asked. Ella rolled her eyes in exasperation and I ignored her.
"Where exactly are we heading this time?" I questioned. He was silent for a minute.
"I'm not really sure. Someplace with fewer zombies. Maybe Wyoming or something," he replied. I thought about it. Chris and I had started out in Ohio, coming across others like Jack along the way.
"That sounds like a good plan. Wyoming did always have a pretty low population. Maybe it'll be less active there," I whispered thoughtfully.
The car fell silent. Jack looked pretty tired, almost like he was going to fall asleep, so I didn't try to start a conversation with him.
It was pretty obvious that Ella didn't want to talk to me either. She had pulled out and old book that looked like some science book out and was reading that.
Chris was too busy driving and thinking of a plan so I didn't bother trying to interrupt him.
I absentmindely tapped on the car door as I stared out the window. Time luckily seemed to go by fast.
Before I knew it over an hour had passed. I had no idea where we were as the car came to as stop at a gas station.
The gas station was obviously abandoned. This was a usual thing for us, though. All of the cars parked to get more gas, as long as there was some left, that is. Luckily there was, and all of the cars quickly began filling their tanks.
Ella didn't pay any attention to the stop and kept reading her book. Jack had fallen asleep and didn't wake up. That guy was like an animal; he could sleep anywhere.
I on the other hand took the stop as an opportunity to get out of the car and stretch my legs and back.
Everyone who exited their cars stayed pretty quiet, being sure not to alert zoms. We were there for about a half an hour while all the cars filled up their tanks and people stretched, while several broke into the gas station to see is anything there was still good.
I stood off to the side of Chris' car, relatively alone. I heard a faint scream.
"Ready to get-" I cut off Chris with a wave of my hand. I listened carefully and heard it again. It sounded like a young girl's scream. My eyes widened and I glanced at Chris. He looked just as pale and shocked as I felt.
