Chapter two
I got to work and slumped onto my desk with my head hitting the table
'Ouch'
'Are you alright Alex?' I looked up to see Rebecca, a woman who works with me, looking at me from her computer.
'I've had a hard night' I moaned sinking back into my hands on the desk
'May I ask what happened? You look tired.'
I quickly remembered to put my phone on vibrate, thinking about whether to tell Rebecca
I don't talk to other people much, well about personal things. I talk to a lot of people, but when it comes to me and my family I don't say anything. Not because I'm embarrassed. I would never be embarrassed by my beautiful girlfriend. But I know she would rather not many people knew about her problems. Anyway, since Alice was born, most of the attention is on her.
'Hello? Alex?' Rebecca was getting impatient now.
'I was up all night with the baby, Millie is Ill.'
'What's wrong with Millie?'
Did she have to ask that?
'She uhh...'
I paused looking at her beady eyes expecting an answer. My phone rang. I jumped, and quickly answered it,
'Millie what's wrong? Do I need to come back? What's happened?'
'Alex... It's Dave, I need you to come and fix a camera in 9J, Have you been here already then? Why do you need to come back?'
I really don't like having the same work and personal number.
Rebecca was still watching me when I stood up to leave, I wasn't sure if she was waiting for an answer, or if she was worried by my sudden outburst when I answered the phone. I hurried out of the room to 9J to find a very stressed looking Dave, at half nine in the morning, and many teenage girls sighing at me. I rolled my eyes and hurriedly tried to get the camera's fixed for the photography class. Even though I was still not sure what to say to Rebecca, I wanted to get out of this room of girls.
I left after a few questions as to why I was leaving the room, and luckily Rebecca wasn't at her desk when I got back. I decided to settle with saying Millie had the flu and needed all the rest she could get.
I made myself a cup of tea and got on with my writing. When Rebecca got back asked again what was wrong with Millie, I told her she had the flu and she didn't ask any questions after that. About an hour went by and I didn't have any calls. So I emailed Millie to see if she was ok.
She emailed back with,
Everything is fine Alex. You were right, going out for a walk did make me feel a lot better. I was so glad to get out of the house. But I'm bored now, and quite lonely. Call me in your lunch break.
Millie xxx
I hate it when I'm at work and she's at home. Alice sleeps quite a lot, which is good in a way, but when Millie want company, she has no one if I'm at work. I wish her old friends still spoke to her. They haven't since she was twenty...
When I finally got my lunch break I went to the canteen avoiding as many girls as possible. Which meant nearly running there as the queue was always really big. I had just got my chips as all the students crowded in and I ran out of the door and out of the front gates. I sat on a bench with my chips and dialled Millie's number.
'Hey Alex' She sounded exited... that's good.
'Hello, are you ok?'
I heard her sigh, 'I'm lonely... I miss you.'
'I miss you too, I finish in a few hours' I said checking the time on my phone
'I know but I have nothing to do.'
'Why don't you call Ella, ask her to come round and talk to you, and then ask her to babysit Alice so I can take you out to dinner tonight' I smiled at myself, I hadn't taken her out for dinner for a long time. It was a good idea. We needed to talk anyway.
'You don't have to... what if she's busy, or doesn't want to see me?'
'Why wouldn't she want to see you'
'She might think the same as the others?'
'Oh and she was four years late deciding you lied? If she's busy ask Jasmine or something' I said sarcastically.
I hate it when she's like this. She puts herself down. She thinks everyone hates her. Well her old friends couldn't trust her. That didn't help her at all. I hate them for doing what they did to her.
'Ok, come home soon.' She whispered
'I will, have fun. I love you'
'I love you too.' She hung up and I sat finishing my chips.
Tonight. I need to talk to her. Be there for her. Give them a shoulder to cry on (hopefully she won't cry in the restaurant...) or just listen. That's what she needs, someone to listen to her. I will tell her I will always love her no matter what, I always have. Ever since I met her twelve years ago.
