"Sir!"

"What is it!?"

"Half the town sir.."

"What about the town!?"

"It's gone sir...."

Tony

I had fallen asleep on a bed in a guest room that Rose let me stay in. I awoke to fucking pitch blackness, and the whole house seemed to be shaking. this was something I'd never had happen. The house shook violently, and I fell off of the bed. "Dammit!" I mumbled, fumbling around in the dark, looking for the door handle. Fucking storms. Fucking world, I was so fed up with it all! when my hand grasped the cold, metal knob, I yanked it open, rushing out into the hallway. I could hear Rose and the little girl talking, and I stumbled, running to the sound of their voices. "Hello??" I called, suddenly ramming into a night stand. I heard something shatter. Son of a bitch that hurt!

"Tony!" I heard Ava call out. Her voice sounded happy to see me.

Great. Now I would have to deal with her, and what ever the fuck this god damn storm was.

I found my way to them, and instantly Ava wrapped me in a hug. I patted her back, unsure what else to do.

There was a few moments of silence, and then a loud crash was heard,  I jumped back a few feet as the house began to shake uncontrollably.

Shit.

"We've got to get out of the house!" Rose demanded.

"Ya think?!" I retorted, man that old lady was dumb.

We ran through the darkness, and I saw, very faintly, Rose yank open the front door.

I dashed outside, only to see that the hole was expanding. My stomach lurched. Oh my god, I'm going to die.

"Ava!" Rose screamed, cupping her hands around her mouth.

"where is she!?" I asked, watching in fear as the house shuddered, while the hole still expanded.

Next thing I know, Rose ran back into the fucking house, leaving me standing on the shuddering pavement.

Well shit. I'm not gonna stay here by myself! I knew I would regret this later, but I threw open the door and dashed inside. In the half light I saw the stairs, and began to rush up them. "Rose!" I exclaimed, realizing how much it hurt to speak. "Ava!" I yelled her name out, just as the house was thrown sideways, and I was lying down on a wall... For a split second I thought I was drunk, or maybe I was just having one hell of a dream, but then it hit me.

The house was gonna fall in the abyss! Son of a bitch! I ran into Ava's room, to find her clutching that ratty, old, stupid bear to her chest. She looked up at me, and without hesitating, I scooped her up, and threw myself out of the room's window. We landed hard on the pavement, and I grimaced, I must have hurt my leg badly, because it hurt like hell. Ava jumped up instantly. "Granny rose!!" she exclaimed, watching as the house and a few others slipped into the pit. she ran to the edge, and I saw that the light was coming back.

"Whoa!" I yelped.

"Ava! Get back here!"

Ugh, I sounded like my father.

she glanced over at me, and her eyes were wet.

"We didn't even get to eat the ice cream," she murmured, and I felt bad for her.

This little girl had lost just as much as I had. Kids that young shouldn't have to deal with that much.

I got up, holy shit my leg hurt! But I didn't let that stop me from getting to her. When I reached her, I sat down, easing the pain off of my leg, and she sat down next to me. Ava lent her head on my shoulder, and I patted her back, not knowing what the fuck I should do. "Sorry," I said, but just that word didn't seem enough. I said it like she had lost a ball, or her goldfish died. But this was much more then that. The word seemed to do the trick though, because she snuffled once, and wiped her tears away.

"It's okay Tony!"she smiled her toothy grin. "We will find ice cream someplace else!"

I chuckled to myself.

This little girl sure was optimistic.

"Yeah," I replied, pulling up my pant leg to get a look at the wound.

It wasn't too bad, just a little swollen, but I was surprised at how much it hurt. Ava looked at the wound too, and frowned.

"Are you hurt..?" she asked, looking worried.

Of course I was hurt! Didn't she see that!?

"Just a little," I said, hoping she couldn't tell I was lying.

"Do you want me to kiss it better? My mommy used to do that all the time for me!" she seemed hopeful, like maybe it would actually help.

Ava must have seen the quizical look I was wearing.

"It helps, I promise!" she was almost begging now.

"Um.. maybe later," I said, standing up. "We need to find a place to go."

That seemed to distract her, because she stood up, and walked next to me. I saw her skip ahead, and I was careful to keep her by me, but she skipped and twirled like the world wasn't terrible, she acted like we were just going on a stroll through the park or something.

Maybe, if none of this happened, I would have a family, and a little girl that was just like Ava.

I scowled, remember I am not supposed to ever  think about that.

But the thoughts came anyway.
