Time left: 2 months and 1 week
The following Monday I woke up refreshed, energized, and completely prepared for the day. I quickly glanced in the mirror one more time before leaving, I was within regulation guidelines for school but I had to admit I still look hot. Leaving the house with a smile on my face and an extra bento, I trotted to school. The closer to school I got, the more nervous I became. I couldn't quite shake it, what was causing me to feel this way? Eh, whatever I'm probably worried about a test or something.
When I reached school, I noticed Mei by the garden briefly admiring the flowers. Her hips swayed as she hummed a beat to one of my favorite songs. Not realizing anyone was around she sang. She was really cute when no one was looking, giggling to myself I snuck up behind her.
"Hey Mei-san, you have a lovely voice." I said whispering in her ear.
"Wahh, Yuzu-san. What do you want??" She instantly became stiff and distant. My heart sank a little from her reaction.
"Um, well-" I was having trouble forming words, I felt my own cheeks turn crimson.
"Mei-san, I brought you something." I was actually a little nervous.
From behind my back, I presented her with a bento. Her eyes widened and her mouth formed an O shape. She was speechless.
"Oh, what is this?" She tried to stay cool and collected but I could tell she was excited. It made me a little happy. My cheeks flushed for the first time in her presence.
"Um, I cooked this for you. I found out from the vice president what you like. So, here." I was beginning to think she wouldn't accept it. Suddenly, she grabbed it from my hands.
"Thanks" she ran off blushing. Rushing past me, I saw that smile again.
It struck me, I think I finally did something right. My friends took notice of my mood the rest of the day. I felt at ease, but to my knowledge for no particular reason. Now and then my thoughts would go back to Mei and her cute reaction. The hardened stern president had a much softer and pleasant side than I previously imagined. These past few weeks I learned a few things about her and honestly I wanted to learn more. The initial reaction she made this morning bothered me, and made me question if I shouldn't give her some space. Maybe she will come to me? The thought seemed promising. By the time I left campus, rumors were floating around about the mysterious bento Mei was eating during lunch. Apparently, she almost never ate while at school.
While still deep in thought I walked right into something.
BAM
"Ouch" I said rubbing my bottom that might leave a bruise. When I looked ahead I realized it was Mei-san.
"Sorry, Yuzu-san." She said politely. Why was she apologizing? I was the one not paying attention.
"No, it's my fault. Sorry. I wasn't looking where I was going. Heh" I laughed awkwardly.
"It's fine really." Mei didn't really seem to mind, red tinted her cheeks.
When brushing my legs off, small droplets of blood formed on my shin. Mei looked as I she just witnessed a murder.
"Uh-..oh god. Your legs" She stuttered and almost losing balance.
"I guess you can't handle blood huh? Haha" I laughed reaching out to grab her, but she steadied herself against the gate leading into campus.
"No, not really. I mean, I'm sure many people don't like blood." Staring daggers at me, I found it cute and smiled back at her.
Before I realized it we were silently walking with one another, it was kind of nice.
"Well, I'm this way." Mei pointed in the opposite direction of my home.
"See ya Mei-san." I waved walking towards my apartment.
"Yuzu-san, wait." Mei called out.
"Yeah?" I turned my head quickly to face her.
"Thank you for the bento, it was alright I guess." She said nervously, her face showed a genuine smile.
I nodded and we went our separate ways.
